Add To Cart outside shopify

AI-generated summary

Adding products to a Shopify cart from an external platform was the main issue. The setup described is a custom storefront that lists Shopify products via the Shopify API, while checkout and payment should still happen on Shopify.

Key point raised:

  • Directly adding items to a Shopify cart from outside the Shopify store/domain is not supported.
  • The cart flow can only be handled through Shopify’s Ajax API, which must run within the store’s own theme/domain.

Practical implication:

  • A separate external site can display the same products, variants, and collections, but it cannot create or manage a native Shopify cart remotely in the way requested.
  • Users would need to be brought onto the Shopify storefront/domain for cart functionality before proceeding to checkout.

Outcome:

  • The discussion gives a clear limitation rather than a workaround.
  • No alternative solution was confirmed in the thread; the request remains effectively blocked by platform constraints.

Hi,

I want to add a product to a Shopify cart from outside Shopify.

My scenario is as follows -

→ I have listed products from Shopify API outside the Shopify (On another platform created my own)

→ Now I want help in how I will add those products in “Shopify Cart” from outside Shopify (another platform) and then the user can checkout and do the payment at Shopify end only.

(The other / my platform will not have a different product/variant/collection than my Shopify account)

Shortly - I want to add the product to the user’s cart by the users outside Shopify and then the user can checkout and done payment at Shopify end only.

This isn’t possible from outside the App, only via the ajax API which has to be done within the store theme/domain.
