Issue: A merchant wants to print a customer metafield (custom data field) on packing slips using Shopify’s Order Printer. They attempted a Liquid loop over customer.metafields to output a field named ‘story_care_cards’ and asked if this could instead be stored as an order property (line-level custom data) at order creation.
Constraints: Order Printer currently does not support customer metafields or line item properties, so the provided Liquid snippet will not work in that app.
Workaround suggested: Use a third‑party document app (e.g., Sufio) that supports pulling customer metafields into invoices/packing lists. Guidance links were provided, demonstrating use of the Customer Fields app’s customer_fields namespace; the same approach should work for other metafield namespaces.
Notes: The Liquid code snippet and documentation links are central to understanding the proposed solution.
Outcome/Status:
No native solution in Shopify’s Order Printer to display customer metafields or line item properties.
Actionable path: switch to an app like Sufio that supports these fields.
Open question: Whether converting the value to an order property at creation is feasible remains unanswered here.
I’m bringing this up again, as I don’t see where this has been solved. I want to add customer metafields to our packing list on order printer, but I can’t figure it out.
I adjusted the line item product or variant code but it’s not working.
{% for metafield in customer.metafields %}
{% if metafield.first == ‘story_care_cards’ %}
{{ metafield.last.value }}
{% endif %}
{% endfor %}
Is there a way to turn this into a property on the order when the order is created? Please help!
It sounds like you may be using Shopify’s Order Printer app. From my understanding the Order Printer app does not currently support customer metafields nor line item properties, so you might want to consider an alternative app, like Sufio.
Here’s a help article from Sufio that shows how to add customer metafield data to documents like invoices and packing lists: https://sufio.com/apps-integrations/helium-customer-fields/. The examples in this article use the customer_fields namespace from our Customer Fields app, but the approach should work with other namespaces as well.
