I spent a lot of time building my shopify store and writing programs to publish products from another system to shopify using the api. Now I find out about this 50K variant limit and then 1K a day after that. Each of my products has 150 variants. I was looking to load 6000 products to start. Now I have to throw out all my work and move to another platform because the $2300 a month to lift this limit is just too much for us.
I recommend that when someone compares plans on your pricing page you should state somewhere that the plans are limited to 50K. Would have saved me a lot of time and money.
I can understand your frustration. If you have already invested significant time building integrations and preparing a large catalog, discovering the variant limits later in the process can be a costly surprise.
For context, 6,000 products with 150 variants each would result in roughly 900,000 variants, which is well beyond Shopify’s standard catalog thresholds. While the limit is documented in Shopify’s developer documentation, I agree that it is not always obvious when comparing plans on the pricing page.
Before moving platforms, it may be worth discussing your use case with Shopify Support. In some cases, merchants can restructure products, reduce variant counts, or explore alternative catalog approaches that avoid hitting the limit as quickly. That said, if your business genuinely requires hundreds of thousands of variants, you’ll want to carefully evaluate whether Shopify’s architecture is the best fit for your needs.
Hopefully Shopify takes feedback like yours into account and makes these limitations more visible during the plan selection process.
I completely understand your frustration. That’s a significant limitation to discover after investing so much time in development and integration work.
I agree that variant limits should be much more visible on the pricing comparison page, especially for merchants with large catalogs. Information like this can have a major impact on platform decisions and development planning.
Hopefully Shopify considers making these limits clearer upfront to help other businesses avoid the same situation.
