2 different languages / domain url?

Good morning, I have a question. I am creating a new website, and have purchased an English theme. Now 2 languages is fine in itself I thought so I continued in the English language.

Then I translated everything to Dutch (2nd language, but never changed the default language). However, I suddenly realize that I just have a .nl domain.

Will that work well with the url titles? I mean, is it possible to get product.nl/com/computer for example?

Or is that a problem now because the default language is English?

I read everywhere that it is better not to change that default language…

Who can help me to clarify this before I continue…

Hi @Bartk1970

You’re right to think about this before continuing! Here’s how Shopify handles multiple languages and domains:

URL Structure & Domains – Shopify lets you use international domains (e.g., .nl for Dutch and .com for English). With Shopify Markets, you can assign the .nl domain to Dutch and .com to English while keeping language-specific URLs like:

Your default language affects the original content Shopify stores, but it won’t break your translations. Since your main domain is .nl, it’s best to set Dutch as the primary language for that domain (without changing the overall default language in Shopify).

Hi,

Tnx so much, But do i understand correctly? Do not change the default laguage, but only change it at “Markets” and with the domain?

Best regards,

Bart

Yes @Bartk1970 Do not change the default language in Shopify, but instead, configure it correctly in Shopify Markets and your domain settings because it will help you keep Shopify’s system intact while ensuring your Dutch site functions correctly under the .nl domain

Thank you very much for the explanation. This is greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Bart

Ok, hang in there!
