I’m looking to A/B test a couple different product image approaches on my website and could use some guidance.
There are two main areas I want to test:
Collection pages: Testing different styles of the first image shown for products in a collection grid.
Product pages: Testing two different sets of product images on the PDP itself.
I’ve been looking through various A/B testing apps, but so far none of them seem to specifically call out testing product images or image sets, especially at the variant or template level.
Has anyone done this successfully? Are there specific tools, workarounds, or theme-level approaches you’d recommend for testing product imagery like this?
Appreciate any suggestions or examples of what’s worked for you.
While I have not tried this myself but I do have an idea how you can do this.
To test the first image on collection pages, your best bet is Shoplift, they have a specific product attribute test that lets you swap the primary image across a group of products.
For testing entire image sets on the product detail page, the most reliable workaround is the duplicate product method. You create a duplicate of the product, upload your new set of images, and then use an app like ABConvert to split traffic 50/50 between the two handles.
To A/B test product images on Shopify, you can use apps like Neat A/B Testing, Dexter, or Shogun Experiments that allow testing on collection and product pages. Another approach is to create duplicate products or templates with different images and use a split‑traffic script or Google Optimize to send visitors to each version. Theme-level tweaks with alternate image sets per variant can also work but usually require some custom code.
You should check out Lyntest. I built it specifically for A/B testing images without messing with your backend data.
Instead of changing the actual product configuration, the app uses a visual selector widget. You simply click on the specific image element you want to test on your page, and the app handles the swap for the visitors.
This gives you granular control to test your Product Page images exactly where you want them.
Since quite a few merchants have messaged me asking for a detailed walkthrough of Lyntest (and I can’t reply to everyone individually! ), I decided to record a full video tutorial.
It covers the whole process to help you visualize how to set up an A/B test on your live store without any code.
