Google Ads Conversion Tracking is essential for understanding the effectiveness of your campaigns and optimizing your advertising efforts. Let’s walk through the basic setup using Google Tag Manager (GTM):

First, let’s create a conversion in Google Ads. Log into your ads account at ads.google.com account and go to Goals > Conversions > Summary (on the left sidebar). Then, click the New conversion action button.

  • Conversion Category: Describe the type of conversion (e.g., “Purchase,” “Lead,” “Sign-up”).

  • Conversion Name: Give your conversion a meaningful name (e.g., “Completed Purchase,” “Newsletter Signup”).
  • Conversion Value: If applicable, enter the value associated with the conversion (e.g., revenue from a sale).
  • Conversion Counting: Decide whether to count each conversion once or multiple times (e.g., for repeated purchases)

Save Your Configuration: Click “Create and Continue

You will now be redirected to a page that shows the different ways to implement this conversion tracking on your website. To no one’s surprise, here at Analytics Mania, I select Use Google Tag Manager.

Google Ads will provide you with a Conversion ID and Conversion Label.

In your GTM account, create a new tag.

Choose “Google Ads” as the product and “Google Ads Conversion Tracking” as the tag type.

Enter the Conversion ID and Conversion Label you obtained from Google Ads.

Now, back to the Google Ads Conversion Tag. We need to configure when the tag fires. This depends on the kind of interaction you want to track. There is no simple and universal rule.

choose custom events from the trigger and create the trigger according to data datalayer event

Preview your GTM container and ensure that the tag fires correctly when a conversion occurs.
Verify that the data is being sent to Google Ads.
Publish Your Changes: Once you’re confident that everything is working correctly, publish your GTM container.

Remember that conversions are meaningful interactions you want users to complete on your website.

By setting up conversion tracking, you’ll gain insights into which ads and keywords drive valuable actions, allowing you to optimize your campaigns effectively.
