A “charge” for $0.00 from shopify-charge.com

I can’t find any way to contact Shopify, so I came here. I need to know how they, or their customer got a cc # that is locked to one merchant.

Thankfully, it was for zero dollars, but those are usually tests. And like I said, it can only be used at one single merchant. The charge was shopify-charge.com. Interestingly, Charge.com said they’d received another email earlier this week with the same question.

Any ideas?

I literally just had the same thing. Watching my cc closely

Hi folks! If you are seeing charges from Shopify on your card but do not have a merchant store or services using our platform, then there is a chance that your billing details have been compromised. I recommend reporting this charge to your bank and having your card replaced.

It’s a virtual card created for and locked to one merchant. I’m checking with that one merchant to see if they’ve had a breach. The $0.00 “charge” was to Shopify-charge.com. What is that? That’s not even close to the name of the merchant it has only been used for. Can you tell what shopify-charge.com is? That’s the problem.

It’s so weird bc no one can say what Shopify-charge.com even is lol. Someone or something ran these cards, right?

I had the same attempted charge from “SHOPIFY-CHARGE.COM 866-938-2427 TX” for $0 today. It was declined due to an invalid expiration date. I had my bank replace the card.

I found a reddit thread with a few dozen similar reports in the last few days. It seems to be a recent trend.

Hi @Triedchargedme

Shopify-charge.com points to a page owned by Shopify that details what a test charge from Shopify might be or why you might have one on your card. These charges are generally test payments for when a billing card is newly added to a store using our services. It is possible that a bad actor has changed their billing statement charge descriptor to look like “shopify-charge” as a misleading tactic. I can’t say for sure in this case.

That was so helpful, thank you! Don’t know if I feel better or worse that it’s happening to many, many people. It’s clear there’s a breach, but who’s it was is the question. Reading through both of those posts, it’s happened world wide, to bank cards and credit cards and virtual cards, cards used at only one retailer online ever or multiple. I’m wondering if the only thing they all have in common is Shopify. It may not be them, it could be some other third party, but the other details are so scattered.

I have confirmed with Shopify they’ve had a data leak AND THIS IS NOT FROM THEM and been hit on 2 cards which have never given details to Shopify

but they originally told me there’s an issue as their systems had an issue and recharged those with new or deactivated accounts

I have 1 common biller, Resmed…anyone else with them?

I had a $0 charge declined by my bank on Friday and again just now. This card is brand new. Just got it a month ago. Shopify has never had this card number so I don’t know.

From the UK, I have the same Active Card check $0.00 from shopify-charge.com 866-938-247 USA

In my bank app the actual merchant says Shopify with the shopify logo, the details/notes has shopify-charge.com 866-938-247 USA

Any ideas what this is for? I have never used this card to make pay shopify for shopify services but have used it to make purchases on websites that run on shopify.

No actual charges have been made, just an active card check but no idea for what.

Have you used the card at all? If so, have you paid the same vendor on both cards? If so, see my post above.

Oh good job, @lallisa ! you’ve gotten so much further than I have. My card was just a virtual one, and like yours was never used to pay for anything directly to Shopify. I’ve never had any direct biz with them.

My card was locked to New Chapter, a supplement/vitamin store. Reading through the Reddit posts it seems there’s no one retailer and no one bank and no one type of card.

See @lallisa first reply above. A breach on their end. Also, check out the Reddit posts in @Erik65536 reply, you’ll see it’s happened to US, EU, and Australia cards, debit cards, credit cards, and virtual cards.

They got ANOTHER virtual card, locked to ONE merchant (different than the first) that also uses Shopify for their store. Is Shopify doing anything about this? Or are they still pretending there isn’t a problem?
