Abandoned Cart Reminders: Just Subscribers or Non-Subscribers?

I have recently initiated the implementation of the Shopify automations for the abandonment cart system.

However, during the process of editing the email, I noticed that the header reads as follows:

“You left items at checkout”

and the TO: is directed towards ‘customers subscribed to email marketing’.

This implies that Shopify’s abandonment cart reminders are only sent to those who have subscribed, and there seems to be no provision to modify or view this rule within the workflow.

Initially, I believed that we could send reminders to individuals who haven’t subscribed as well. It’s like a saved cart that we are telling them about.

Other systems such as Mailchimp / Omnisend allow sending abandon cart reminders to anyone who has entered the checkout process and their email address. They dont have to subscribe to get an abandon cart email. This was also true of the previous shopify system, from what I remember.

Could we get a reply from Shopify on this please?

I’ve googled it and the only thing I can find is that you can change it to ‘all customers’ but when I go in to mine, it has a small lock icon on that line and won’t let me change it from ‘customers subscribed to email marketing’

Any update to this? I’ve been emailing support but he gave me an outdated answer where it states to do this in notifications but it’s no longer handled there, I was only able to edit my abandoned checkout to all, but cart and browse is only to subscribers. Seems like such a waste to not be able to edit to all customers

Just been on a Shopify support chat and here’s what they told me:

For the Abandoned Checkout flow, Shopify allows emails to be sent to all customers because these are transactional emails, not marketing emails. These emails are sent in response to a specific action taken by the customer (i.e., abandoning their checkout), and they’re designed to complete that transaction.

On the other hand, the Abandoned Cart and Browse Abandonment flows are considered marketing emails because they’re not tied to a specific transaction. Therefore, these emails can only be sent to customers who have subscribed to receive marketing emails.
