Abandoned checkout and security emails never firing on store

Hello Shopify Support Team,

I’m experiencing an issue where certain system-triggered emails have never been sent from my store since its creation. Below is a clear summary of the situation:

:white_check_mark: Order confirmation emails are delivered successfully
:white_check_mark: Password change emails are delivered successfully
:white_check_mark: Test emails sent from Marketing / Automations are delivered successfully
:white_check_mark: Sender domain is authenticated (SPF/DKIM verified)

:cross_mark: Abandoned checkout emails have never been sent
:cross_mark: Abandoned cart emails have never been sent
:cross_mark: Security-triggered emails (suspicious login / forced password reset) have never been sent

Additional notes:

  • Customers do provide valid email addresses during checkout

  • Checkout email field is enabled

  • Automations are active

  • This issue has existed since store creation

  • Email delivery infrastructure is confirmed working, so this does not appear to be an SMTP or domain issue

Based on the above, it seems that the abandoned checkout and security email event triggers were never initialized or are not firing on the store level.

Thank you for your help.

There is an important distinction between a notification email and an automation email.

Notification emails are sent by Shopify and cannot be turned off, except for local delivery notifications. These are found in Setting → Notifications

Automation emails are emails that you, as a merchant, are responsible for. You create the email template and set up the automation with Marketing → Automations and/or the Shopify Flow app. These pull the email template you create in Shopify Messaging (Email). Most things are already templated for you. You just revise, adjust, activate the template, turn on the automation.

Everything is turned on. It’s interesting that when users can’t log in because they receive a new password by email, those emails don’t go out either.

I’ve set everything up, automations are turned on, but they still don’t work.

If you go to Flow → Recent Runs, you will see exactly which step is failing

I would like to clarify the following scenario regarding abandoned cart emails.

If a new customer registers an account, does not accept any email marketing consent, then adds a product to the cart and leaves the store without going to checkout:

– Will this customer receive an abandoned cart email?

Or is it required that the customer:
– either accepts the email marketing consent, or
reaches checkout and explicitly opts in, or
completes a purchase first

In other words, I would like to confirm whether registration alone (without any consent) is sufficient for sending abandoned cart emails, or if explicit email consent is always required.

Thank you for clarifying.

Follow simple logic. Go to the automation workflow, click on the email that is sent, and look at who it’s being sent to.

Shopify’s abandoned product browse email goes to ________.

Shopify’s abandoned cart email goes to ________.

Shopify’s abandoned checkout email goes to ________.

You have all the tools you need to find out what goes to who and why. Look at the Recent Runs and look at why it failed. Go through the steps. It’s your store. You need to find the limits of the Shopify Messaging app.
