Hey, so my website does not get a lot of visits and about 30% of the visits are from the same location. What does this mean, and is there any way I could block this location?
Hi @Simon159 , thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community!
If you are getting most of your store visits from a certain location you want to just double check all the places you have advertised your store. Sometimes the algorithm of the platforms you’re using will push posts to certain locations when people in those locations are responding well to it. If you are running ads you can also see the analytics of those ads to see where the majority of the people who are engaging with your ads are from.
If you haven’t noticed any changes with your promotional ads or posts and you would like to stop a certain location from being able to place orders in your store, you can do that by making sure your shipping settings are configured to not let people from those locations place orders. When you set up your shipping zones in your store you can select which countries you offer shipping options to or not. Simply make sure that the country you’re concerned with is not included in any of your shipping zones. You can learn more about your Shipping Zones here.
You mentioned you’re not getting a lot of visits to your store in general and I wanted to share some resources that can help you boost that. Check out this great blog post 21 Real Ways To Drive Traffic To Your Website. If you want to give me more information about how you are currently marketing your products, what websites you’re using, if you’re running paid ads, etc. I can give you more detailed information about avenues you might have missed, or how to improve your current promotional ads.
Let me know if you have any questions about anything I shared.
Hello @Simon159 ,
This is Gina from flareAI app helping Shopify merchants get $7Million+ in sales from Google Search, on autopilot.
There are a few possible explanations for why 30% of the visits to your Shopify store are from the same location. Here are few.
-
A significant portion of visits from the same location could be due to bots or automated scripts that are visiting your website. These bots might be scraping your content or trying to exploit vulnerabilities.
-
If your store is relatively new or you’re making changes to it, some of the visits might be from you or your team testing features, updates, or changes on the website.
-
Sometimes, a lot of visits from the same place might be because of proxy servers or VPNs, which can make it seem like all the visits are coming from one place; but it could also mean that a real group of people from that place is really interested in what you’re offering, so there’s more traffic from there.
-
Competitors might be checking out your website to gather information about your products, pricing, or strategies.
Before you consider blocking the location, it’s recommended to take a few steps.
→ Blocking an entire location might have unintended consequences, especially if genuine customers are among the visitors. If you decide to block specific IP ranges, ensure that you’re not blocking legitimate users.
→ Use IP Geolocation Tools. These tools can provide more information about the origin of the traffic. It’s important to note that IP addresses can be misleading due to the use of proxy servers or VPNs.
→ Use analytics tools like Google Analytics to gain more insights into the behavior of these visitors. Look for patterns in the pages they visit, the time spent on your site, and whether they complete any actions (like making purchases or signing up for newsletters).
→ If these visitors are engaging with your content and products, they might be genuine customers. Focus on improving their experience and encouraging conversions.
->If you suspect that bot or automated traffic is causing issues, consider implementing security measures like CAPTCHA, bot detection, or rate limiting.
