We are a U.S.-based Shopify Plus store, 100% focused on subscriptions. We currently use Shopify Payments and Recharge. We want to allow customers in different countries to use their local payment method. e.g. Naver Pay in Korea.
I am trying to figure out how to do this! The Recharge integration is key. Would a service like Global-e work for us? Is there anyway to have a different payment platform than Shopify Payments for JUST INTL orders? And similar questions…
Great question and a common challenge for subscription-first stores expanding internationally!
A few things to unpack here:
Global-e compatibility: Global-e does work with Shopify Plus but its Recharge integration is limited, it handles the localisation and local payment methods well but subscription billing through Recharge can get complicated since Global-e essentially takes over the checkout flow. Worth a direct conversation with both Global-e and Recharge support before committing.
Shopify Payments + local methods: Shopify Plus does allow you to add alternative payment gateways, so technically you can offer local payment methods like Naver Pay, iDEAL or Klarna alongside Shopify Payments. The challenge is making this conditional for international orders only, which requires some custom logic.
Most practical route for your setup:
Look at Checkout Extensibility (Plus exclusive) to conditionally show payment methods based on customer country
Stripe as an additional gateway supports many local payment methods and plays nicer with Recharge than most alternatives
Adyen is another strong option for multi-country local payments at scale
The Recharge + international payments combination is genuinely one of the trickier setups in Shopify Plus; the subscription layer adds complexity that most localisation tools aren’t fully built for yet.
If you want to think through the architecture for your specific markets, i’ll be happy to be involved let’s rub minds.
This gets complicated fast with subscriptions in the mix. A few things to untangle.
Global-e works well for one-time purchases and handles local payment methods, but recurring subscriptions through Recharge are tricky because the billing happens through Recharge’s checkout, not Shopify’s. Global-e and Recharge don’t play nicely together last I checked.
Shopify Markets Pro is worth looking into since it handles local payment methods natively and stays within Shopify’s checkout flow. The question is how well it works with Recharge’s subscription billing for international customers.
Honestly for Korean customers specifically, if Naver Pay is a must-have, a dedicated landing page routed through a local payment processor might be cleaner than trying to force it through one unified checkout. What percentage of your subscribers are international vs domestic?
You do not need to pay additional commissions for Naver Pay or other payment methods that are supported by your Stripe account and support recurring payments. So just check Stripe based solutions that offer Stripe Subscriptions integration for Shopify.
