I’m trying to bring my store over from Magento 2, so I have a lot to learn here, but I am trying to set up a payment method that allows customers to pay by “Purchase order” I want them to be able to select it as a payment method and have a box where they can enter a purchase order number. Perhaps there is an app for this, but I cannot find one.

Yes, there is an easy way and Shopify-compliant method to enable Purchase Orders.
From inside of your Shopify admin dashboard follow these steps;
- Scroll to the bottom of your admin dashboard and click on the “Settings” tab. It’s at the very bottom left hand corner of the screen.
- When it opens up, click ‘Payments’ option.
- Ignore and skip over the various payment options shown at the top of the page such as Shopify Payment, Supported Payment Methods, Alternative Payment Methods, and so forth. — select [MANUAL PAYMENTS].
It’s right here inside of the Manual Payments section is where you can perform magic!
For example, in the box that says ‘Payment Instructions’ feel free to explain to your customer step-by-step exactly what you’d like them to do. I have clients that entered the following content
[Your order was successfully placed. However, it is PENDING until you make payment.
To remit payment, simply open your mobile device to a digital wallet of your choice. We gladly accept Cash A**, Zelle***, Venmo***, Google Pay and Apple Pay. If you wish to pay by credit card a separate email invoice will be sent to you within the hour.
Send digital wallet payments to our account telephone number of record: (555) 555-5555. All order will be shipped immediately after confirmation of payment. Please allow 3 to 5 days for shipping and delivery. Got questions? Call us at (555) 555-5555]

CONCLUSION
Using the Manual Payment acceptance tool offered by Shopify is a powerful eCommerce solution if used properly.
In fact, AFTER setting up payment instructions inside of the Manual Payment tool, you can open up the “Customer Notifications” tool to create an autoresponder email message that goes out to every customer who places an order. Doing this allows website visitors to receive how-to-pay instructions at checkout coupled with an email message (with a receipt) that reminds them to send in their payment.

I have the same issue. How can the customer record their purchase order #? How could I record it in POS? Thanks
We have that issue, but in the “Payment instructions”, we put “Please reply to our order confirmation email and attach your Purchase Order.” and although it’s not ideal, it seems to work okay. I wish it had a field in the checkout for this option though.
