Actually separate inventories for separate locations

Hosting a pop-up sale event this weekend and did the work of creating a new location and moving products over to the separate location to create an easier/faster check-out for what will be a hectic sale weekend and also to avoid confusion at our main shop but come to find out that you can still see and sell through all inventory and it’s not actually limiting inventory view at all. I’m so annoyed because that’s just dumb. what exactly is the point if it doesn’t do that? I’m hearing this has been an issue that has been brought up a bunch since 2021 and still not addressed by shopify. It feels like such an easy update?? I don’t understand why this hasn’t happened.

Hey @shopoddbird

Yeah you’re right, locations do separate inventory, each one holds its own count, they just don’t stop a checkout from selling other locations stock, which is the part you actually wanted. For the weekend, set your POS device to the pop-up location so sales pull from that stock, then make a collection of just your pop-up items and pin it in POS so staff tap from that instead of scrolling the whole catalog. That alone gives you the fast, no-confusion checkout. Turn off “continue selling when out of stock” on those items too, so POS won’t let them go once they’re gone at the popup. But yeah, there’s no native way to fully lock a POS to one location’s stock, it’s been a gripe for years, so this is the best setup for now.

Hope that helps! If it did, a Like and Marking it as Solution goes a long way and helps others find the fix faster too.

Best,
Moeed

Hey @shopoddbird. Hope you are doing great!
Basically, Shopify locations don’t restrict the inventory view; they are just for tracking or reporting, not access control.
For your pop-up, pin a specific collection to your POS so that only those products show on the selling screen.

Hello there @shopoddbird
I get the frustration, this catches a lot of merchants. Shopify locations do split inventory, but the Online Store still pulls from total available stock unless fulfillment priority and location availability are tightly managed. For a popup, a reasonable workaround is to designate the event location as the primary fulfilment location for POS and have only that location have available inventory during the event. They also do a quick bulk edit or transfer just before opening so the main store inventory is zero stocked for those items, temporarily preventing cross selling confusion.

I know this thread is a bit old, but has anyone found a new Shopify app or feature that helps manage inventory for pop-up events? Would love to hear if there are any recent updates. For those still struggling, maybe try exploring third-party apps that might offer more granular inventory control. Curious to see how everyone’s managing this now!
