Hello everyone.
I, like most store owners, wrestle with Google, search rankings, and appearing on the shopping tabs. I’ve managed to get our products quite high already on Google after a month or so and also on shopping, but annoyingly, we get left behind when users start to filter out products, seen below.
When I look at some products after filtering, there are additional product details that I just cannot seem to find anywhere. Are these created with supplementary feeds or somewhere in shopify?
Thanks.
Filters other than the basics such as gender, color, size, material and patterns, are fully automated by Google, which extracts the data from the product itself.
Be sure to add product identifiers such as barcodes and brand names to ensure Google knows what your products are.
If you are the manufacturer, you can sign up for a manufacturer feed and submit extra product details.
You can also add product details in your data feed, more info: https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/9218260
Hey, @EmmanuelFlossie thank you for taking the time to reply.
I don’t have a GTIN or MPN so I don’t send these to Google. Your very helpful reply to me last time helped me set up some feed rules in GMC to get my products showing on Google Shopping.
It looks like I will need to go down the data feed route, however, I cannot see how I can add supplementary information to my Content API feed that Shopify already sends to Google.
Is this something I can do with adding a supplemental feed in Merchant Centre or is there a way to add additional product details to the Google feed on Shopify?
I’ll be honest, having spent about a day on getting my GMC feed working so I can appear in shopping results, I’m nervous about making more changes, but I’m just worried I’m missing out on appearing in results when people start filtering results.
Thank you.
Rosalind.
You can follow the official guide here: https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/7439058?hl=en
You can add extra info, 3 different ways.
-
In the data feed solution you are using (what you can do, depends on what you are using) Check the documents or contact support for the app you are using.

Yes improving your feed, is a good idea to improve the quality and performance of your listings.
Oh my god, @EmmanuelFlossie I never thought about using the feed rules! I’ll set up some of those as the changes will apply to multiple products then I can just add new OR statements when new products are released.
A quick test confirms that adding the new product detail values won’t break anything so I’ll publish this change for just one product and see if it works and then add the others in. Thank you.
Actually, I had to do this with a supplementary feed in the end as you can only set the product detail once for the feed using the feed rules so I couldn’t say, if id = x then colour = y else, colour = z.
But the feed is working and adding the additional data to my products. I’ll wait for Google to pick this up and check the shopping tab. Thanks again.
Just a small update for anyone else wondering, it looks like Google just guesses the filters apply to your products based on the product title and description so I’m going to just add in those keywords to make sure they’re picked up.
