I would like to add between PW and “Create…” button two checkboxes on my registration page; a newsletter subscription and an agreement to the terms & conditions.

It is technically possible to add custom fields to your registration form by adding HTML elements directly to your theme code. I would definitely recommend hiring a developer that is familiar with this process as it can be a bit tricky to set this up and map the data to Shopify correctly.
Alternatively you can use an app such as Helium Customer Fields which provides a simple drag and drop interface to create a custom registration form and installs without having to edit any code.
