Add "from" in front of product price (everywhere) (Dawn)

Topic summary

A user wants to add “from” before product prices throughout their Dawn theme store for highly customizable products that don’t have fixed pricing.

Current Situation:

  • Products are highly customizable, so fixed prices don’t work
  • Plan to use Draft Orders with a “Request a quote” button instead of standard “Add to cart”
  • Shopify automatically adds “from” only when products have variants with different prices

Proposed Solutions:

Product Customization Apps:

  • Recommended apps like Infinite Options, Globo Product Options, and Variant Option Product Options
  • These allow customers to customize products on the product page with dynamic pricing based on selections

Manual Workarounds:

  • Edit currency formatting in Settings > General > Store currency to display “From” before all prices
  • Warning: This causes issues at checkout (would show “From From $25.00” with variants, and actual checkout price would still be the base amount)
  • Could remove variants and just change formatting, though this is a workaround rather than ideal solution

Draft Order Workflow:

  • Replace “Add to cart” button with “Request a quote” button using theme editor sections/blocks
  • Note: This button wouldn’t automatically create draft orders; merchant would need to create them manually in Shopify admin after receiving customer inquiries

The discussion remains open regarding the best approach for this specific use case.

Hi there!

How can I add “from” in front of the product price (everywhere) in Dawn, please?

Thank you SO much in advance!

Hi, @poma . I’m happy to help you out with this!

Can you tell me more about how your products are priced and what kind of products you sell? Can you also tell me more about how customers will be placing orders? For example, will they be purchasing items directly on your online store or will you be using draft orders? The reason I’m asking is to make sure I’m giving you the best advice for your situation.

“From” is added before the product price automatically if the product has variants at different prices. I’ve included some screenshots below to show an example of a product with variants at different prices, and how it shows up on the online store. Depending on your product and how it’s priced, this is usually the best option to get “From” written before your product prices. You can read more about adding variants to products here.

Example of how the variants are priced:

Example of how it appears on the storefront:

If you don’t want to add variants, but still want your products to say “From” before the price by default, there may be other ways of doing this. For example, you can edit your currency formatting in Settings > General > Change formatting (in the Store currency area) so that your price always says “From” before the price. You can see an example of this below. That being said, there are some problems this can cause. Since the price itself isn’t being changed in this example (only the currency formatting is being edited), if a customer adds an item to the cart, or tries to checkout, the price would just be the amount shown. Also, if you do this and you also set up a product to have variants with varying prices, this would cause it to display as “From From” before the price. There’s a way to edit that setting as well, but I think there may be a less complicated way of setting this all up. Once I have more information on how you’d like it set up, I can look into more options.

Example of setting to change currency formatting:

Example of how this would effect the price during checkout (while it says “From $25.00”, the total cost is just $25.00):

Hi Erin!

Thanks so much for your detailed reply and apologies for my late response.

This store is for highly customizable products, so we cannot provide a fixed price, thus the need for “From”. The option to use variants that are permanently displayed with a fixed price wouldn’t work.

Draft Orders is what I have in mind, yes.

Ideally, when a customer is interested, they’d click the “Request a quote” button (rather than Buy now or Add to cart) and a Draft Order would be created with basic information such as contact details and one or more notes field where they can further explain what they need (we might ask some questions or not here).

What would you recommend in this case?

If there’s no easy/cheap solution, I guess we could change the pricing formatting to read “From” and remove any variant so that “From from” never occurs, right?

Thanks a lot!

Hi, @poma . Thank you for getting back to me with that information! Based on the example you gave I have a couple of suggestions that may work for you.

The first thing I recommend is to use a product customization app. These apps allow customers to customize products right on the product page. The product’s final price is then based on the specific customizations that were made. The cost of each customization and the customizations available are determined by you. I’ve included a few popular product customization apps below, but you can find a list of similar apps here as well.

Another option is to do something similar to what you described with draft orders. It is possible to replace your “Add to cart” button with a “Request a quote” button. This guide explains how to do this for vintage themes. Since you’re using an Online Store 2.0 theme, it’s best to do this using the available sections and blocks in your theme editor. That being said, this button wouldn’t create draft orders. Instead, you would be emailed and you would need to create the draft order manually within your Shopify admin. This guide has more information on draft orders.

Don’t hesitate to let me know if you have more questions!
