While chatting with “Sidekick, Shopify’s AI assistant” it advised me to post the below topic.
Allow language add-ons on the Basic plan without requiring a full upgrade to Grow. As a solo EU merchant, I need 3+ languages to serve my markets, but the other Grow features (extra staff accounts, shipping discounts) don’t apply to me. A per-language or language-pack add-on would benefit thousands of global merchants selling cross-border.
Hi @JellePlantenga
A practical solution is to use a third-party translation application such as Translate and Adapt or Weglot, which allows you to add multiple languages without upgrading plans. You also can create copies of your themes for key markets with localized content. It’s not perfect, but it gives you some flexibility so you can serve EU customers without moving to Grow.
Did you even bother to go and talk to a support advisor an actual human being for support first:
https://help.shopify.com/ → click “chat with human” or question mark button next to chat (as of March 2026)
AI is a tool for drafting things you still need to put in actual thought and effort not just copy pasted and blindly follow what it commands you to do.
The feature request itself is worth pushing forward, but through the Shopify Community Ideas board rather than a support chat or Sidekick. Votes on idea posts actually get tracked and reviewed by the product team, so if this specific ask - a per-language add-on for Basic - has enough traction, it’s more likely to go somewhere than a one-off support conversation.
On the practical side, it helps to understand exactly where the language limit sits. The 2-language cap on Basic applies to Shopify’s native multilingual storefront feature, meaning the number of active languages you can publish through the core platform. Third-party translation apps like Weglot or Langify work outside that restriction because they handle translation on their own infrastructure - so they’re not bound by your plan’s native language limit. You could stay on Basic, add one of those apps, and run 3, 4, or 5 languages without needing to upgrade.
The trade-off is app cost versus plan cost. Weglot starts around 15 euros a month at the entry tier, and depending on how much content your store has and how many languages you need, it may actually be cheaper than upgrading to Grow - especially if the extra staff accounts and shipping discounts that come with Grow aren’t relevant to your business.
One thing worth noting: Shopify Translate & Adapt is free, but it still pulls from your plan’s native language allocation. So that one won’t help you get around the Basic limit natively.
If you later need things like market-specific pricing, separate domains per region, or local payment methods, that gets into Shopify Markets territory, which has its own plan-level features. But if the goal is just clean language switching for EU visitors, the third-party app route is the most flexible option available right now without changing plans.
