Add Metafields to product view

The metafields are visible in the product bulk edit view but not in the product view or product view filters. Seeing as this is the main view for organising products it is very inefficient not to have metafields available for sorting and filtering. Surely can’t be too hard to implement as it is in the bulk edit view anyway.

This is a major blocker for organising products so I would consider it a priority feature to add.

Hi @oboult

You’ve posted this same request a few times now, and I get the frustration, but reposting it here won’t actually push it any further, it’s the same crowd of merchants and partners each time, none of whom can add it to the product roadmap.

So save yourself the effort and put it where it can actually be seen: community.shopify.dev, that’s where Shopify’s own product and dev teams engage

In the meantime, a couple of things that actually help right now: the bulk edit view isn’t just for editing, you can add your metafield as a column there and sort by it, so it works as a rough organising view today. And the strongest workaround for organising by a metafield is automated collections, make a collection with a rule based on your metafield value and it groups those products together automatically, which gives you real filtering without waiting on the product list to catch up. Use those for now, and push to the dev community where it has a real shot.

Hope that helps! If it did, a Like and Marking it as Solution goes a long way and helps others find the fix faster too.

Best,
Moeed

Hello @oboult
You are encountering a well-known problem that metafields can be used in the bulk editor, but they do not show in the main product list or filters by default. A practical workaround is to use Shopify Search & Discovery to make metafields filterable product attributes, and then mark the metafield definition as “filterable” in the settings. For sorting, you can also use automated collections with metafields conditions to replicate that. Not there yet, but the addition of filterable metafields and smart collections will go a long way towards closing the gap until product list filtering matches bulk edit.
