When duplicating a product, add an optional checkbox to exclude category metafields from being copied. This would allow Shopify Magic to generate fresh AI suggestions based on the new product’s title, description, and images, rather than inheriting the original’s values. It would be great if Shopify could add this quality of life update.
Hi TEXXSIA,
At the moment, Shopify doesn’t offer a native option to exclude category metafields when duplicating a product. When a product is duplicated, those values are copied over as well, so Shopify Magic may continue using the original product’s category-related data instead of generating fresh suggestions.
As a workaround, after duplicating the product, you can manually clear the copied category metafield values on the new product. Once those values are removed, Shopify Magic should be able to generate suggestions based on the duplicated product’s own title, description, and images.
If this is something you do often, another option would be to handle it through a custom workflow or app logic so those metafields can be cleared automatically after duplication.
Clearing it manually does not always generate new values. Yes, I do it often, I already tried Shopify Flow, but it does not work with Shopify Magic and I dont think there is anything else available
In that case, I don’t think there’s a reliable workaround at the moment. Shopify Magic appears to retain or depend on the duplicated product’s existing category metafield data, and simply clearing those fields doesn’t consistently trigger fresh AI-generated values.
Since you’ve already tested Shopify Flow as well, it sounds like this is a limitation of how Shopify Magic currently works rather than something that can be solved through automation.
I think your feature request is justified. An option to exclude category metafields during product duplication or a “Regenerate with Shopify Magic” action for category metafields would give merchants much more control and eliminate this manual process.
You see any active staff around collecting feedback??
Don’t just make a post here feel finished and move on.
For actual feature requests, give it to a human in the chat on the help docs, these are peer to PEER forums.

THEN post or reply to a thread like this.
Shopify’s own AI helper directed me to this community site and suggested to me to post it here.
Hey, @TEXXSIA
Hope you’re doing well!
That’s a smart feature request. It would save time by eliminating the need to manually clear category metafields after duplicating products.
And now a human expert with actual expertise is giving you real info.
Don’t follow an AI blindly it’s just a stochastic parrot that will gladly tell you what you want to hear for feel good actions instead of being effective.
