Add PO number field to checkout - Dawn theme

Can anyone help me add a custom text field for PO number to checkout? I just want an open text field to appear if customer selects “Purchase Order” as their payment option. I’m using Shopify Dawn. I found this related thread from a few years ago, but don’t see an accepted solution: https://community.shopify.com/topic/439826

Since Shopify upgraded to checkout extensibility now user can develop a custom APP for checkout page to add PO number field which will save the PO number entered by user in order metafield.

Please refer the below screenshot which does the same.
