This afternoon I was adding products to my store and the tagging was fairly simple using the chips. Tonight I logged in to add more products and the tags interface was changed to a very unusable filterable popup interface with all the tags listed with check boxes. For a store with many tags this new interface is not usable. The filter and sorting options are helpful to narrow down your selection ONLY if you remember the tag you are looking for.
Here we have the interface I am presented with when logging in today. With over 100 tags, this interface could be titled “Unmanageable Tags.”
The previous interface using chips/pills was far superior and easier to use. (I don’t have the previous interface to show a comparison.) The alphabetical list of chips, with the most frequently used duplicated at the top, made it easy to see all the options at a glance and tap on the item that you need.

Yes, this new tags system is horrible. Before I can easy search for the existing tag with typing the first few characters but today it just won’t show up even I type the whole word. This make reusing the previous tags extremely hard.
Hopefully this will be getting fixed not just for this but all the reasons in the original post too, but for not finding tags when you type – it seems to be case sensitive.
So if your tag is “Purple”, typing “pur” or even “purple” will not show, but typing “Pur” the tag will show.

Holy hell! This updated “feature” makes adding products take so much longer.
This is what happens when you practice DevOps and developers are in charge of design instead of UX and UI designers. Crap is deployed to production at the expense of the users.
Totally mind blown-- they rolled out ANOTHER update which makes it WAY worse still… Shopify, please stop. Id be perfectly happy rolling back to the last version (mediocre) or last years version (pretty good) over this madness. Now it shows you either the top 4 -or- EVERYTHING alphabetically in a giant scroll list… Its mind-boggling to me that a company as large as Shopify would roll out such a massive interface downgrade. Being able to sort the list in different ways was/is a very necessary basic user interface requirement for something with potentially hundreds of options. The only positive is that is seems to glitch out less often… but ill happily take a glitchy/finnicky good interface over this. Just Awful.

Agreed…
There’s another recent thread with similar feedback here: https://community.shopify.com/post/1575850
Mentioned in that thread, a workaround while waiting for a fix:
Products > select the product checkbox > More Actions > Add tags
This interface is a little less painful (it’s not rebuilding the entire tag list every time at least)
