When adding a customer in the Shopify POS you used to be able to add an address to the customer without a phone number, now the phone number field is required and there doesn’t seem anyway of making it not required? Surely this is a bug?
Quite surprised to not have a response about this, is no one else facing this problem?
Hi Shopify Support,
We use Shopify POS Lite. Since a recent Shopify POS update, saving a customer address in POS now requires a phone number. Customer creation itself does not require phone, but when we add an address to the customer profile, the phone field is mandatory and the address cannot be saved without it.
Our store previously allowed saving customer addresses without a phone number. We also do not have the POS Pro “Required checkout information” setting available, and this does not seem to be a checkout prompt issue.
Can you please confirm whether this is an intended change or a bug/regression in the Shopify POS app?
This change has been a huge problem for us, we capture customer addresses in-store to send them a catalogue and since the update this has become an increasingly awkward exchange, as many customers don’t want to provided their phone number (and rightly so, as in this situation it is not strictly necessary).
Having spoke to Shopify Plus support about this issue, the response they gave was that it was an intentional change (a ‘feature’, not a bug) based around the requirement of many shipping carriers such as FedEx that require a phone number for automatic label generation.
Phone number validation also requires the number to be entered including the international dial code (+44 here in the UK). This isn’t particularly intuitive on the iPad keyboard as it requires navigating to the special characters section to enter the plus sign, rather than just inputting the number.
Overall it feels as though the changes have been made here without full consideration of different business use cases and the day-to-day usa of Shopify POS. The store responses to these changes that have come my way have been overwhelmingly negative.
This is ridiculous, there are so many reasons you don’t want to take a phone number from a customer. We use the customer function for tracking Gift Aid, which you don’t need a phone number for.
They also haven’t implemented this on creation of a customer in the backend so why do this on the POS!?
