I am trying to add my existing domain to Shopify. The domain is registered with namecheap who have a DNS template for Shopify which I applied to the domain before trying to add it to Shopify.
When I enter the domain in the field and click next, I get the error “A site with that domain name already exists”.
Is this because I setup the DNS records before adding it to Shopify? I have already cleared the DNS and it is showing on https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx as having no records, but the error still persists.
Do I need to wait for the DNS cache from the previous state to be purged at Shopify’s end? If so, how long will this take?
Could you just confirm for me here, would you have already added this domain to a previous store you created using Shopify?
It can be the case that the message you refer to seeing here presents itself where the domain in question has already been added to a store created using Shopify.
If so, and if you can show that you are the current holder of this domain registration, then we can help you out with removing this domain from the previous store, freeing it up to be added to your current one.

Is this a new business, or are you moving an existing venture online or to Shopify from another provider?
Thanks for getting back to me. I can say that I definitely haven’t added the domain to any stores. I bought the domain from namecheap earlier this month. I’ll make contact through the help centre and reference this thread.
I am building a new store linked to Printful print-on-demand. I am currently setting things up in a partner account just to get the hang of it and then I will transfer it over to a subscription when I feel it is ready.
I have used a lot of automation to generate and publish the print on demand products. This is the first of multiple (currently 4 planned) stores I plan to setup over the next year.
I wanted to get the automation processes right with this first store and then any further stores will be a much smoother setup process. I am aiming to launch this store in the next week or so.
There doesn’t seem to be a contact form in the help centre. If I visit https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/add-a-domain/connecting-domains and scroll to the bottom of the page and click the “Contact Shopify Support” button, it just takes me back to the help centre home page and lists the help and community topics.
