Admin Panel's Poor Design Updates. What is Shopify Doing?

Topic summary

Shopify merchants are expressing frustration over recent admin panel design updates that prioritize aesthetics over functionality and speed.

Key Issues Identified:

  • Product filtering problems: A recent update removed the ability to use Ctrl+F to search through product types and vendors, forcing users to manually scroll through hundreds of options. Previously available search boxes have been eliminated.

  • Search bar accessibility: The product and inventory search bar now requires an extra click to access (via a top-right icon), whereas it was previously permanently visible. This additional step is described as annoying and inconvenient.

  • Tagging system: The current tagging interface is reported as slow and clunky compared to its version from 5 years ago.

Merchant Sentiment:

Multiple users agree that Shopify’s design team is making arbitrary updates that hinder functionality rather than addressing more pressing usability concerns. Merchants emphasize they value speed and ease of use over visual appeal, particularly when managing large product catalogs with thousands of items.

The discussion remains open with no resolution, as frustrated users call for Shopify to reverse these changes and refocus on practical functionality.

I’ve been on Shopify for 6 years now, and often times than not I get frustrated over design updates. The admin panel is aesthetically pleasing, clean and cool looking but was there thought put in ease of use or speed?

There was another update made on the product page in admin panel and another step back in terms of usability imo.

We used to be able to easily navigate through products. In my particular use-case we have thousands of products and hundreds of product types and vendors. It used to be very easy to find product types/vendors, IRCC there was a search box that you can type in and filter out the product list. Shopify decided to take the search box out, fine. I used Ctrl+F to find what I was looking for.

But now with the most recent update I AM UNABLE to CTRL+F to find what I need! I have to SCROLL through hundreds of product types or vendors to find what I am looking for.

How is this smart design?

What are you doing Shopify design team? Stop focusing on aesthetics and please focus more on speed and usability. I can only speak for myself, but I much prefer and care about how fast we can do our jobs and not how pretty something looks.

ps. The tagging system is slow and clunky now. It was fine how it was 5 years ago.

Agreed, they have much more pressing things to fix to make this a user friendly system, than to remove search bars and and change how icons look. Frustration never ends here.

Wait, there is more!

What about the recent update on the Products and Inventory admin update?

Now, to get to the convenient SEARCH BAR an extra click is required on the new icon located on the top/right. Why, Why, Why?..

Please PUT BACK the “permanent” search bar o top of the products listing as it was till last week! The extra click to make the Search Bar to appear is Sooooo annoying, and inconvenient!

Anybody listening? Show me.

Thanks
