Hi everyone,
If you’re a Shopify merchant in the US reading this today, your store is now live inside ChatGPT. Not coming soon. Not a waitlist. This week, Shopify flipped the switch on Agentic Storefronts and millions of merchants can now sell to ChatGPT users by default.
Harley Finkelstein posted about it this morning. This is real, and it’s moving fast.
I made a video breaking down what Agentic Shopping means for Shopify stores and how to think about it. A lot of you had great questions after my last video, and honestly, a lot of those questions were pointing right at this moment.
So I wanted to keep the conversation going. Below are answers to the most common things I’m hearing from merchants about agentic commerce. And I want to hear from you. Drop your questions in the comments, tell me what you’re testing, or what’s keeping you up at night about this.
FAQ
- What is agentic commerce and why does it matter right now?
Agentic commerce is when AI stops being just a research tool and starts being a buying tool. Instead of someone Googling your product, landing on your site, adding to cart, and checking out, they ask ChatGPT “what’s the best [your product category]” and can buy from the results without leaving the conversation.
As of now, your Shopify store is discoverable inside ChatGPT through Agentic Storefronts. Your products are being surfaced to hundreds of millions of ChatGPT users through the Shopify Catalog.
- How does it work on my end?
Shopify’s Catalog uses LLMs to categorize and standardize your product data so AI platforms can actually understand what you sell. When someone asks ChatGPT a shopping question, relevant products from Shopify merchants show up in the response.
On mobile, the buyer finishes the purchase in an in-app browser. On desktop, they get sent to your store in a new tab. Orders show up in your Shopify admin with ChatGPT referral attribution. You stay merchant of record. You keep the customer relationship. No extra fees beyond your normal processing rates.
- Is this just a ChatGPT thing?
No, and this is the part that people are sleeping on.
Agentic Storefronts connect you to ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and the Gemini app. All managed from your Shopify Admin. Google and Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which already has 20+ major retailers and payment companies behind it. This is the infrastructure for how AI commerce is going to work across every platform.
- Do I need to build an app or set up a special integration?
No. It launched by default. No app to build, nothing to install, no custom integration needed. Your products are automatically eligible through Shopify’s existing data infrastructure.
- What happened to Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT?
OpenAI originally let people complete purchases entirely inside the chat. They pulled back from that. Turns out users were browsing and comparing products in ChatGPT but weren’t actually finishing purchases in-chat. The new model sends buyers to your storefront for checkout, which honestly gives you more control over the experience, payment options, and post-purchase flow.
- How does this connect to AI Visibility/GEO?
This is exactly why AI visibility matters more than ever now. Agentic Storefronts handle the distribution, but they surface products based on data quality, entity clarity, and structured signals.
If AI models don’t have a strong signal about your brand, who you are, what you sell, who it’s for, you’re going to get passed over for brands that have better structured data and stronger entity association. That’s what we use LLM Outreach for. Reinforcing those signals so your brand gets recommended when someone asks a relevant question.
- Is this only for big brands like Sephora and Steve Madden?
No. The whole point of the rollout is that every Shopify merchant is included. There’s even a new Agentic plan for brands that aren’t on Shopify yet but want to get listed in the Catalog and be discoverable across AI channels.
I think the playing field is probably more level today than it’s going to be in 12 months.
- What should I do right now?
- Make sure your product data is clean and rich. Titles, descriptions, images, variants, pricing, inventory. AI is reading all of it directly and deciding whether to recommend you.
- Check your Agentic Storefronts settings in your Shopify admin.
- Update your FAQs, return policies, and brand info through Shopify’s Knowledge Base.
- Test commercial-intent prompts in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. See if your products show up.
- Start investing in tools like LLMS.txt, JSON-LD, and LLM Outreach. If AI can’t read your store, it can’t recommend it. LinkGPT is great for this.
- What if I’m not in the US?
In a word, prepare. Google, OpenAI, and Shopify have all said global expansion is coming. This is going to roll out the same way every major platform shift does. US first, then everywhere else fast.
The merchants who use this window to get their data clean, their entity signals strong, and their AI visibility dialed in are going to be way ahead when it hits their market. Don’t wait until it’s live in your region to start thinking about it!
