AI shopping agents are buying through Google Search now - here's the 5-point checklist to make your Shopify store discoverable to them

A few things shipped in the last few weeks that, together, change what “being online” means for a store:

  • Google rolled out agentic checkout in standard Search results - Wayfair went live with it. An AI agent can find a product and complete the purchase without the shopper ever opening the store.

  • Shopify shipped a free agentic-readiness scanner.

  • Visa (Trusted Agent Protocol) and Mastercard (Agent Pay) are rolling out payment rails built specifically for AI agents acting on a buyer’s behalf.

So this isn’t a “someday” thing - it’s a “this quarter” thing. The standard underneath most of it is UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol), an open spec from Google and Shopify that lets an AI agent discover a store, read its catalog, and run checkout.

We ran 28 Shopify stores through a UCP readiness check last month. Zero were fully ready for an agent to buy from them. The same gaps showed up over and over:

  • ~92% had no signing keys - an agent can’t verify it’s really talking to the merchant

  • ~88% had no payment handlers declared - an agent can’t actually complete checkout

  • ~72% had no machine-readable return/shipping policy - an agent can’t answer “can I return this?” for the buyer

If you want to sanity-check your own store, here’s the 5-point checklist of what an AI agent actually needs:

  1. A UCP business profile - so the agent can discover your store and what it can do (usually served at /.well-known/ucp)

  2. A machine-readable catalog - structured product + variant data the agent can browse and search

  3. Cart + checkout capabilities - declared in the profile, so the agent knows it can actually buy

  4. Signing keys - so the agent can verify the merchant’s identity and trust the responses

  5. Machine-readable policies - returns, shipping, FAQs in a format an agent can read and quote to the shopper

Most stores have maybe one of these, by accident (usually #2, because Shopify structures product data well). The other four take deliberate setup.

How to check: Shopify’s own readiness scanner is a good start. There are also independent tools - we build one (UCPtools) that does 4-level validation, gives you an AI Readiness Score with the exact gaps, and can generate the UCP profile from your store data. We just put it on the Shopify App Store this week (free tier; there’s a paid agent-simulator add-on if you want to watch a real AI agent run a purchase through your store). Happy to answer UCP questions in the thread either way - not trying to turn this into an ad.

Genuinely curious: has anyone here tested whether an AI agent can complete a checkout on your store yet? What did you find?

Disclaimer: UCP is an open standard by Google and Shopify. UCPtools is an independent community tool, not affiliated with either.

It completely shifts how we view the eCommerce experience.

Future shopping experiences will not only be tailored to humans but also to AI-driven agents that will make the buying decisions.

Brands tend to look at AI as an overlay marketing strategy. But it has evolved into a buying strategy already.
