Currently, Shopify’s Growth > Campaigns attribute conversions based on UTM parameters set at checkout. This means that if a customer uses a discount code tied to a campaign but arrives without the correct UTM parameters (e.g., via word of mouth, email forwarded by a friend, or a printed flyer), the order is never counted as a conversion in the campaign report.
The request: Allow merchants to define a tag (or discount code) as an additional attribution rule for a Campaign. Any order carrying that tag — whether applied manually or via a Flow workflow — would count as a conversion in the Campaign.
Why this matters:
- Discount codes are already a common proxy for campaign tracking (especially for offline, influencer, or referral campaigns)
- Flow can tag orders automatically when a specific code is used, making this a natural extension of existing tools
- It would close the gap between what merchants can track and what Campaigns actually reports
This would make Campaigns a much more complete attribution tool, especially for merchants running multi-channel promotions where UTM tracking isn’t always possible.
Hey @John_Holden
hope you’re doing well!
+1. Using discount codes or order tags as an additional attribution rule would capture conversions that UTMs miss, especially for offline, influencer, and referrals campaigns, this would make campaign reporting much more accurate.
Solid request, and well scoped. You’re right that Campaigns lean on UTM/checkout params, which misses offline, referral, and forwarded-link orders even when a campaign discount code is used. Tag- or code-based attribution (especially with Flow auto-tagging) would close that gap cleanly. This belongs under the product-feedback tag with a clear “+1” from anyone who runs multi-channel promos — the Flow tie-in makes it a low-friction extension of existing tooling.
Hi there @John_Holden
That’s a fair feature request, particularly for offline and referral campaigns where UTM parameters are liable to get lost. A practical workaround is to tag orders via Shopify Flow based on the discount code, then use that order tag for own reporting and segmentation. This will not make the order count as a Campaign conversion at this time, but it does keep the atribution data intact. Would be great if Shopify Campaigns adds support for discount codes and/or order tags as additional attribution rules.
