Yesterday, we were suddenly subject to the new Shopify customer list UI which provides for an advanced filtering interface and saving by segment.

Aha, I thought, another update (without warning) from Shopify. OK so far. Looks interesting.
Then cue my slow head-exploding graphic when I realize that I cannot filter by customer name, phone number, email, address on the customer list!!! This is bananas!
What if I want to see all customers with the first name of “Dave” or a create a segment with phone numbers starting with “864”? What if we need to get a hold of a customer, but we cannot really remember the exact spelling of the customers name? The filtered list view greatly helped troubleshoot that issue in the past, but is no longer possible.
The documentation suggests that we must now use the top search bar to find customers by name, phone, email, etc. This IS NOT A GOOD SOLUTION: a) the top search bar is slow (it searches all the table indexes, not just the Customer Table), b) it shows only a few (10) results, c) the view is smaller and harder to read, d) its ephemeral nature makes it sub-par when doing customer searching and troubleshooting as you can’t navigate back to a filtered list.
I sincerely hope that I’m missing something here, but the inability to search for a customer on a customer list view, is extremely annoying and counter-intuitive – it pretty much breaks every convention for list view functionality that we’re used to.
Now, I’m not against change generally (it seems that the new filtering interface is quite good), however, Shopify needs to add the ability to filter by the main customer fields: name, email, and phone, etc. in the customer list asap.
Again, I hope that I’m missing something fundamental here, if so, please correct me of there is something I’m not seeing.
As an aside: how does one get more information as to upcoming changes (as they seems to happen regularly)? Is there a roadmap, page, email list, or such that provides a “heads up” on such? Typically, I would expect to see a dismissable modal that would pop-up, introducing users to new features as they’re rolled out.
