Allow customers to upload photos when submitting a return request

When a customer selects a reason like “damaged,” “defective,” or “wrong item,” there should be an option to upload one or more photos as evidence. Currently there is no image upload field in the native return request flow. This creates friction for merchants who need visual proof to process claims, dispute with suppliers, or assess return validity. A simple file upload field (similar to contact forms) tied to specific return reasons would significantly improve the return management workflow.

You can create your own return flow and make a return page with an upload button.

Hello, thank you for your consideration. Yes, however, messages still end up in customers’ email inboxes, and they may not always check them. Also, this should apply within Shop.app as well; what I’m referring to isn’t limited to the online store only. The only place customers reliably pay attention to is the order status page.

You are completely correct. Shopify’s native self-serve return flow is highly rigid and lacks a built-in file upload feature, forcing merchants to manually email customers back and forth just to gather visual evidence of damaged or defective items.

While you cannot alter Shopify’s native backend returns portal, you can easily bypass this friction by handling proof of damage right on the front-end product page using Misk Variant & Product Options.

Here is how you can set it up to streamline your workflow:

  • Add a File Upload Field: Use the app to create a sleek File Upload button directly on your product pages. Customers can use this to upload images (PNG, JPEG) or documents directly before checkout or when reporting an issue.

  • Keep the UI Short and Easy: To keep your page looking clean and scannable, place this form right underneath a compact Size Guide link and neat Button swatches for your sizes. This gives you a highly organized, all-in-one product page where buyers can submit custom requests seamlessly!

Hi, this is Linette from SearchPie: SEO, Speed & Schema

I completely agree with you. It is incredibly frustrating that Shopify’s native self-serve return portal still lacks a simple photo upload field for damaged or defective items. Having to email the customer back and forth just to ask for visual proof completely defeats the purpose of an automated return system and slows down your workflow.

Unfortunately, there is still no way to add a file upload button directly into that native flow without using a third party return app. A free but manual workaround is to add a clear note in your return instructions asking customers to reply to their return confirmation email with photos attached, but it is definitely not as seamless as it should be. You should absolutely submit this as a feature request to Shopify support because merchants have been begging for this basic functionality for years.

Hope this helps.

Shopify Forms free app will allow to add multiple file uploads and yes, one can use (again free) Shopify Flow to (partially) automate handling of submissions.

Hey @twecoop .

Shofify native returns don’t support photo upload yet.
Post this in admin, go to help, then give feedback so the product team sees it.
For now, search the App Store for returns apps like Loop returns or Afterships Returns, which already support photo upload.

You’ve described the situation perfectly and very clearly. It would be fantastic if something as simple yet important as this could be handled through Shopify’s native return process. Hopefully they’ll implement it soon.

Thank you, but unfortunately this can’t be resolved through the form, as it needs to be displayed directly on the order status page. Many customers don’t check their emails, so having it visible there is essential.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. Yes, I will definitely pass this on to the Shopify team as well. I’m also currently looking for a third-party app as a backup solution. However, the built-in return process is generally very smooth—if just a few small gaps were addressed, it would be perfect.

Hello, thank you very much for your suggestion and detailed explanation. The app looks great. However, for the return process, communication and information exchange with the customer is needed more on the order status page rather than through a form. Thank you again.

Hello there @twecoop
It’s a common hole native to the returns flow, and does add friction for merchants dealing with quality disputes.

One practical solution is to use a returns manager app that allows media uploads on return requests so customers can attach photos in case of specific reasons such as damaged or wrong item. Alternatively, some merchants create a custom return request form through Shopify Forms or a customer account app, and then they convert approved requests into a return note on the order for processing. That way, evidence-gathering stays organized without using the standard returns UI.
