Any recommendations for a live chat app that doesn’t require customer email to start chatting?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a live chat app for my Shopify store where customers can start chatting instantly without being required to enter their email first.

My main goal is to reduce checkout drop-offs — many visitors reach checkout but don’t complete the order, and I want to help them quickly without adding any friction like email forms.

Ideally, I’m looking for:

  • No mandatory email before chat starts

  • Real-time live chat (not just chatbot)

  • Works well on mobile

  • Preferably free or affordable

If you’ve tried something that works well in this case, I’d really appreciate your recommendations :folded_hands:

Just use Shopify Inbox. It’s completely free and built right into the admin. You can go into the settings and turn off the pre-chat form so customers can just type a message and hit send immediately. I use it on my main store for exactly this reason—forcing an email just kills the conversion momentum.

If you want something a bit more advanced later, Tidio is solid too. Their free tier is pretty generous and you can disable the pre-chat survey in the widget settings. But honestly, start with Shopify Inbox. It handles mobile perfectly since it’s native.

Yeah most live chat apps let people start without email but you gotta be careful because it also means you lose the conversation if they close the window. The big question is whether you’re actually available to respond fast because if someone’s at checkout and asks a question but waits 5 minutes for your reply, they’re already gone. Are you planning to be online during your peak traffic hours or were you thinking of mixing this with some automated replies?

Yes, response time is critical.

I’m actually available most of the time, especially during peak traffic hours, so I can jump in quickly when someone reaches out.

At the same time, I’m planning to set up a few automated replies to handle the first interaction (like greeting or common questions), just to reduce friction and keep things moving.

My main goal here is to help customers who reach checkout but don’t complete it — this is a major issue I’m facing in the Egyptian market specifically. A lot of users either get confused, hesitate, or even forget details like their email, so I want to assist them in real-time and make the process easier.

So I’m trying to find the right balance between being available live and using automation to support that.

I did start by trying Shopify Inbox, but i can’t remove the email no matter what, and it’s really missing with my conversion rate, that’s why i’m trying to find other options.

Oh this is something I’ve seen a lot of stores struggle with!

Honestly for your exact use case.. no email gate, real checkout focus, I’d just go with Tidio or Chatra to start.

Tidio is probably the most popular one here and for good reason. Free plan is decent, setup takes like 10 minutes, and customers can just start typing without any forms. Does the job.

But if reducing checkout dropoff is specifically your goal, Chatra is worth trying first. It has this feature where it automatically pops up a message when someone’s been sitting on checkout for too long like “hey need any help?” before they leave. That proactive nudge is genuinely useful.

Crisp is another solid free option if you want something clean and simple.

One honest thing though whichever app you pick, make sure someone is actually watching the chat during your busy hours. I’ve seen stores set up live chat and then respond 3 hours later. At that point it’s doing more harm than good honestly.

Start with the free plan on any of these, see if you actually get chat volume then decide if it’s worth paying for more features.

Good luck even getting one or two checkout saves a day adds up fast

This is a common issue, forcing email upfront adds friction, especially at checkout. A few options you can try. Tidio lets users start chatting without email, and Chatty is a very clean Shopify live chat app.

Also, one thing that’s working well lately is using WhatsApp chat instead of traditional live chat. Customers are already comfortable there, and their zero friction to start. We have seen better response rates using apps like Ctx: WhatsApp Chat for quick support and recovery.

But personally, I suggest testing 1–2 of these and checking where your users respond more, live chat vs WhatsApp can vary by audience.

The situation is a bit specific, so I’d love your opinion.

I’m on the Shopify Basic plan, so I can’t really customize the checkout much, and I’m trying to stay with free tools/apps only for now.

The store is cash on delivery focused, and I’m targeting customers in Egypt, so checkout friction is a big problem for me. A lot of visitors reach checkout, but almost none complete it.

For example, I’m getting:

  • decent traffic

  • good add-to-cart

  • a strong number reaching checkout

  • but almost no completed orders

From what I’m seeing, the biggest issues seem to be:

  • customers hesitate once they see the checkout form

  • email feels like friction for them

  • many prefer quick human help instead of filling out forms

  • when someone actually messages me, it’s much easier for me to help them finish the order

So I’m trying to find a free option that works well on Shopify Basic, helps reduce checkout drop-off, and ideally lets customers start chatting without requiring email first.

Do you think, with those limitations, that live chat is still the best path?
And is there any free app or setup you’ve seen work well specifically for stores that can’t customize checkout because they’re not on Shopify Plus?

Would really appreciate any advice.

That setup should work well then. The auto greeting thing really does keep people from bouncing while you’re grabbing your phone or finishing something up.
