App to allow mixed delivery methods (pickup-only + shipping-only products in same order)?

Topic summary

A pet accessories store with both online and retail operations is seeking a solution for customers to purchase pickup-only and shipping-only products in a single transaction. Currently, Shopify’s native checkout blocks orders containing both fulfillment types.

Initial Recommendations:

  • Multiple users suggested Zapiet – Pickup + Delivery app as a solution
  • The app was described as capable of splitting fulfillment methods per product and providing clear customer communication

Key Update:
After testing with Zapiet’s support team, the original poster confirmed the app does NOT support mixed fulfillment in a single order. Customers must still place two separate orders—one for pickup items, one for shipping items.

Current Workaround:
One user shared a creative solution: setting pickup-only items to an extremely high weight (1000kg) with a corresponding shipping policy charging £100,000, effectively forcing customers toward pickup through prohibitive shipping costs.

Status: The issue remains unresolved, with the original poster still seeking alternative apps or solutions.

We run a pet accessories Shopify store with a retail space and we’re currently facing a limitation at checkout. Some of our products are available only for in-store pickup, while others are available only for shipping.

Right now, Shopify doesn’t allow customers to purchase pickup-only and shipping-only items in the same order. Instead, it f doesn’t allow the customer to proceed with the order.

We’re looking for an app or workaround that allows customers to:

  • Add both types of products (pickup-only and shipping-only) to the same cart
  • At checkout, split the delivery method automatically (i.e., pickup for some items, shipping for others)
  • Ideally, show a clear message or breakdown so the customer knows what will be shipped and what must be picked up

Does anyone know of an app that supports this type of hybrid fulfillment logic?

Hey! @JVinagre ,

You’re right Shopify’s native checkout doesn’t currently support hybrid fulfillment in a single order where some items are pickup-only and others are shipping-only. This creates a frustrating experience for customers. However, there are a few workarounds and apps that can help. Apps like Zapiet – Pickup + Delivery are specifically designed to handle this type of scenario. They allow you to assign specific fulfillment methods (pickup or shipping) per product and automatically split the logic at checkout. These apps also offer clear communication to the customer, showing which items are for pickup and which will be shipped, so the experience remains smooth and transparent.

Yeah, Shopify’s default checkout doesn’t support mixed orders with both pickup-only and shipping-only products, which can be limiting.

A solid solution for this is using the Zapiet - Pickup + Delivery app. It allows customers to add both types of items to the same cart, and then automatically splits them at checkout, assigning shipping or pickup per item. It also shows a clear breakdown so customers know what’s being shipped and what’s for pickup.

It’s built exactly for retail stores like yours with hybrid fulfillment needs. Let me know if you’d like help setting it up or exploring other similar apps.

After spending a few hours chatting with Zapiet’s customer service, I finally understood that the app does not split a single order if it includes items that are pickup-only and others that are shipping-only. Customers still have to place two separate orders — one for the pickup items and another for the shipping ones. So unfortunately, I’m back where I started when I first posted this message.

Does anyone have another suggestion?

I am afraid that Zapiest doesn’t allow pickup only products and shipping only products to be part of the same order. do you have any other suggestion?

I have exactly the same problem, I set the weight of collect only items to 1000kg and have a shipping policy for items at that weight that says shipping is £100,000 and an appropriate message.
