Hi @iccagus , I think you are referring to discounting a tagged product. We are refurring to discount to a tagged customer. You cannot tag a customer group, say VIP, and give a discount to only your VIP customers.
Hi @Denise-in-NZ But there’s a huge caveat in that.
So, let’s assume:
You have a VIP customer A. Their email ID is: john@example.com for example.
(Since all the customers are identified in Shopify via their email)
Now if they come back another day, and use their email - well they should get a discount. That’s the expected behaviour. It’s good.
But, what if someone else simply puts in John’s email for whatever reason? Well, then they will get the discount on John’s behalf.
That’s a huge security flaw. And, one of the ways to bypass this is by verifying if John is the one utilizing the discount, and no one is impersonating them through his email.
Hope this helps!
Please let me know if I missed something.
Cheers!
Not if accounts require login…
Big surprise, another blatantly obvious missing feature which SHOULD be part of the platform and people have been BEGGING for it for years, and Shopify does nothing about it. I can create a discount code and filter customer eligibility by things like Specific Customer Segments or Specific Customers, but when I select Automatic Discount that option goes away. WHY? WHY? WHY!?! That makes absolutely no damn sense.
Check out the app ADG – Discount & Gifts.
It fills that space for now, until Shopify implements this very basic feature.
4 YEARS LATER we are also searching for this functionality (automatic discount to tagged customers/automatic discount based on region). Apps that are recommended here are very expensive for such simple functionality that can be implemented in only a few lines of code.
I am happy to help Shopify in implementing this functionality. Please contact me!
The problem is not that they don’t know how to add the feature, it’s that they don’t want to. They would rather receive the revenue share from the apps that people pay for to add features like this, than implement it into the platform for free. It seems to be their business model. They built a fairly competent platform, but one that is missing many glaringly obvious features, and their solution to that is always “there’s an app for that” - which of course costs money, and they get a piece of that.
I totally get the “add and app to increase revenue” model, but this isn’t 2009 anymore. They’ve had well over 10 years to sweeten the pot and keep their software competitive. Their competition includes features and benefits natively in their software that Shopify leaves to the app community. And you know the old adage, “If you want something done right, do it yourself”. Although there are many great apps, there are just as many duds. Shopify needs to consider the fact that a bad app is a bad experience to their end users and a bad mark on the brand. IMO, I believe Shopify has a great opportunity to boost the overall satisfaction of their clientele by giving them periodic feature enhancements that add value to their clients. Currently, their lack of including a LxWxH field for products makes calculating accurate shipping costs a nightmare (especially with their Default box option). Just not sure who thought this was a good idea of there? And how come no modern e-commerce software utilizes AI for help build a product? For example, on the manufacturing or distribution side of business, a product doesn’t typically come as one unit (each). They often come in a case of X boxes with Y units per box. Are any e-commerce companies going to finally elevate the game here? Why aren’t they asking questions as part of a product set up, or providing fields to account for this level of product variant? This is core IMO, and none of the big ecomm brands are doing this well. If I want to sell an “each" product, why wouldn’t I want to offer a box and case price as well? Or have the case/box details and pricing in the system and associated to the individual product? They’ve completely missed the fact that products have other variants outside of decoration, etc. (i.e. color, size, etc.) Oh, and there’s a really big mistake that Shopify has done in my opinion… the biggest “no-no” of any software yet. They allow you to create identical product codes/sku for multiple items. Most databases consider the product code/sku as the key- the absolute one unique thing that cannot be duplicated natively in the database. This ensures accurate data and no duplicate products. Try it at the variant level (give all of your sizes or colors the same SKU. You’ll be surprised to know that someones fat fingers can completely destroy your data. At some point, Shopify started allowing this to happen out of the blue. Shopify having 24/7 chat support is the #1 reason I use them. I wish their product didn’t require it.
Hey, I’m working on a new app to solve this problem. It’ll be free for early adopters, so send me a DM if you’re interested.
Now that Shopify Functions are available for all stores, it’s possible to create discounts with practically unlimited logic, that will load fast as well. So if you’re not wanting to use an app, you should use Functions on your store directly.
Hey Everyone,
I have installed this new app https://apps.shopify.com/regios-automatic-discounts
Works a treat! I think it is what we were all looking for.
Give it a go!
Denise
Not sure if you are still looking (cause it has only been 4 years) but give this new app a go… works for me and does everything I think we were looking for https://apps.shopify.com/regios-automatic-discounts
FINALLY A SOLUTION! Thank you
Hey, Ryan, this is almost possible now with Shopify Functions. You can’t check whether a customer is in a segment, but you can at least check whether a customer has a given tag, and apply a discount accordingly.
https://shopify.dev/docs/api/functions/reference/order-discounts/graphql/common-objects/customer
That’s what I ended up using in my automatic discount app. Not sure what your setup is, but I reached out to the Shopify Functions developers today to ask if there are any plans to add support for segments soon. No response yet, but hopefully they have something in the works!
Hi. I’m in the same boat. Exactly the same issue: a tagged customer list (trade) receiving an auto discount and non-taxable choice.
Same here.
It seems that would be a good solution!
But Selly is $30/m.
GLassy_Al, was it able to give your the specific discounts per tagged customers? That’s all I need, like many in this chat.
… and yet, it sounds cumbersome.
Wow! Just the intro descriptions really point to our concerns and wants. Should give it a go! Keep us posted on how it does for you guys.
