What advice can you give as “guidelines” for addressing environmental concerns of consumers generally towards enviromental concerns in packaging? We are not a product aimed at the “sustainability product” market. However I struggle to know how much emphasis I should place on designs that are seen to be (i.e. very obviously) environmentally friendly. We often make “invisible” design details that are environmentally friendly. But often these are offset by changes that offset these gains. Creating a “wow” experience that ALSO gets the product to customer in perfect condition is often the dirrect opposite of reducing waste and environmental impact. I often share with my customers 1:1 (when they ask) that a good product that arrives perfectly thefirst time saves the waste and carbon that would be created if a consumer threw our product out because they didnt like it or it was damaged so we had to replace with a 2nd. What advice do you give clients in this area regarding how to handle the environment issue regarding the packaging and opening “experience”?
Topic summary
A packaging designer seeks guidance on balancing environmental concerns with creating an impressive unboxing experience that protects products during shipping. They note that while they incorporate “invisible” eco-friendly design elements, these are often offset by other choices needed to ensure products arrive undamaged.
The designer’s current approach: explaining to customers one-on-one that perfect delivery reduces overall waste by avoiding returns and replacements due to damage or dissatisfaction.
Key tension: Premium unboxing experiences often conflict with waste reduction goals.
