Hi the community, I have been here for a while and I have some questions
I recently updated my product images to include high-resolution photos with zoom functionality, but my average time on product pages hasn’t improved significantly—it’s currently 1 minute and 15 seconds. Additionally, some customers have mentioned that the images don’t fully showcase product details, such as sizing or material textures. I also haven’t included lifestyle images, which could help customers visualize the products in real-world settings.
What improvements should I make to my product images to enhance user experience? Should I include videos or 360-degree views, and would adding lifestyle photos help increase engagement?
Hey there,
Brian from OpenThinking here!
You’ve already tackled high-resolution photos and zoom, which is great for clarity, but if customers are still saying they don’t see enough detail, there are a few things you can try:
- Show Close-Ups & Different Angles
- Include macro shots for texture or material close-ups.
- Show the product from multiple angles to give customers a full view (front, back, side, and any important details).
- Add Sizing Guides & Scale References
- Overlay measurements or show the product next to a common item (e.g., a person wearing or holding it, or a known object for scale).
- In fashion or furniture, a photo of someone using/wearing the product can instantly clarify fit or scale.
- Use Lifestyle Photos
- Lifestyle images let shoppers visualize how the product fits into their daily life.
- Show the product in relevant, real-world scenarios—this can spark ideas on how they would personally use it.
- Consider Videos
- A short video walkthrough can highlight how a product moves, fits, or changes under different lighting.
- Highlight Key Features & Materials
- If the product has special features (e.g., waterproof lining, unique stitching, intricate patterns), call those out with annotations or short text on the image.
- Customers shouldn’t have to guess about quality—show it off clearly.
- Keep File Size Under Control
- While high-res images are key, make sure they’re optimized so they load quickly—page speed is crucial for user experience and SEO.
- Test & Iterate
-
Experiment with different photo formats (lifestyle vs. plain background, static vs. 360°, etc.) and track time on page or conversion rates to see what resonates.
-
Gather feedback from customers (through reviews or emails) on whether the new visuals help them feel confident in their purchase.
Incorporating a mix of these strategies often leads to higher engagement and better conversions. Customers appreciate clarity—so the more information and context you can provide in your visuals, the better your chances of holding their attention and winning their trust. Good luck!
Hi @DarylMaguire95
It sounds like you’ve made a solid start by updating your product images with high-resolution photos and zoom functionality, but let’s dive into a few improvements you can make to enhance user experience and boost engagement further. Here’s what I’d suggest based on your current setup and customer feedback:
1. Showcase Product Details Clearly- Customers are mentioning the lack of clarity in details like sizing and material textures. You can fix this by:
- Adding close-up shots that highlight specific features (e.g., stitching, material quality, or small design elements).
- Including a size comparison image, such as a product next to a familiar object (like a phone or a hand).- Use images with annotations or text overlays to point out key product specifications directly on the photo.
2. Add Lifestyle Images- Lifestyle photos are a game changer when it comes to helping customers imagine your products in real-life settings. For instance:
- If you’re selling bags, show them styled with outfits or used in different scenarios like a work commute or travel.
- If it’s home décor, show the items in a well-styled room setting.- These images create an emotional connection and often increase purchase intent because they show how your product fits into their lives.
3. Consider Videos or 360-Degree Views- Videos are fantastic for demonstrating functionality, features, and real-life use cases. They’re especially useful if you sell products like clothing, furniture, or anything with intricate details.
- A 360-degree view allows users to interact with the product online, giving them a comprehensive understanding of how it looks from every angle. This is particularly helpful for items where aesthetics or physical details are a top concern.
- If you can manage it, include a short video demo (even 10–15 seconds) or animations of the product being handled, opened, or used.
4. Optimize Images for Page Speed- While high-res images are great, ensure they’re optimized for fast loading times. Slow-loading pages can frustrate users and cause them to leave before exploring your products. Tools like TinyPNG or Shopify’s built-in image compression features can help.
- Use Shopify’s lazy loading feature to prioritize visible content and load other images as the user scrolls.
5. Provide Multiple Angles- Show the product from various angles (front, back, side, and top). This gives users a full picture without leaving them wondering about unseen parts of the item.
- Combine with the zoom feature for even more clarity.
6. Include Context-Specific Images- If you’re selling apparel, include model photos with measurements and details about the size they’re wearing.
- For textured or patterned items, close-ups and well-lit shots are crucial to communicate quality.
My Personal Take on Lifestyle Images and Videos
From my experience working with eCommerce stores, I’ve seen lifestyle photos significantly increase engagement. They humanize the product and make it relatable. Videos, especially for tactile products, build trust because people can “see” how it works. I’d prioritize those changes first if your goal is better engagement.
Practical Tools to Help You Implement These1. Apps for 360-degree views: Try Shopify apps like Magic 360 or Spin Studio.
- Image editing: Use Canva or Photoshop for lifestyle image mockups or adding annotations.
- Video creation: You don’t need professional equipment—your phone camera paired with good lighting can produce excellent short videos.
Final Thoughts
Yes, adding videos, 360-degree views, and lifestyle images would all help enhance the user experience and likely boost conversions. Focus on showing every possible detail of your product and making it easier for users to visualize owning it. Try A/B testing these updates to see which changes have the biggest impact on engagement.

@DarylMaguire95 gosh so many GPT generated replies here lol. I’ve seen companies encounter similar issues before. I’ve even worked with a company that specifically helps you leverage GenAI to create 3d visualizations from 2d images but although those techniques might be effective… it’ll cost you a lot to do this plus too much added effort.
Here is what you do…you bring authenticity and liveness to your product page by adding some user generated content, instagram videos and live youtube shorts/videos right under your products in your product description section etc. Try this… this is a very quick and free method to try if its working.
