Are Shopify Analytics not working?

Topic summary

Multiple Shopify store owners report that their analytics have stopped tracking visitors accurately, particularly from the UK and EU regions. Despite having confirmed sales and traffic from Google Analytics, Shopify’s native analytics show minimal or zero visitors.

Key Issues:

  • Analytics not registering mobile/tablet visitors, only showing bot/crawler traffic
  • UK/EU visitor data completely missing despite confirmed sales from those regions
  • Problem appears to have started around late 2024 (October-December timeframe)
  • Facebook Pixel and Google tracking codes also affected for some users

Identified Causes:

  • Customer Privacy settings related to GDPR/cookie consent are the primary culprit
  • Issue often occurs after theme updates, particularly to Shopify 2.0 themes
  • Both external themes (ThemeForest) and official Shopify themes (Prestige, Minimog) are affected

Solution Found:
Navigate to: Online Store > Preferences > Customer Privacy

  • Change setting to “collect after consent” under EEA/UK data collection options
  • Install a GDPR/cookie consent app (e.g., Ultimate GDPR EU Cookie Banner)
  • Analytics will only track visitors who actively consent to cookies

Current Status:

  • Some users report this setting has been moved or removed in recent Shopify updates
  • Latest location: Customer Privacy > Cookie Banner > Regions (can deselect countries to collect data before consent)
  • Shopify support has been widely criticized as unhelpful, often suggesting paid apps instead of solutions

Hello @Giftnius @ashleyyxaa @ashleyyxaa @TraininDay @Cjeers !

One of the shops I was working in also had the same problem.

It went back to normal when I changed the “collect after” setting in the Shopify Customer Privacy section to "collect after "which led to data disruptions. They had this setting without a Cookie app/GDPR theme.

You can find this setting in preferences.

Check if that’s an issue for you too and let me know!

You saved my life on this one! Shopify support useless on this. Thank you!! Also, Shopify should warn users that this will be the behaviour once you choose the option…

Can’t find the options in the setting. Can you tell exactly where i find it? Thank you

Online store > Preferences > Customer Privacy.

Under ‘Choose when marketing and analytics data is collected for customers from the EEA and UK’ click ‘collected after consent’.

Make sure you’ve installed a privacy & compliance app - I used Ultimate GDPR EU Cookie Banner

Analytics will now track EU & UK visitors if - and only if - they click to consent to cookies.

I have the same problem, counting no visitors and it’s such a crucial time of the year. Have reached out to Shopify support for weeks now and no help. Tryed to follow the steps with the cookies but didn’t do anything. Anyone another solution?

Same Problems since 3 Weeks ?

The steps of @boundbyhand helped! >

Thanks, that was the issue with me too

Hi, im having this issue but the ‘collect after’ box does not exist in my admin area. Im guessing it may have been removed since this post. No Uk visitors or EU visitors are being shown.

Same, did you find a solution to this?

I have the exactly same issue, but there is no "collect after " option anywhere in my admin.

With the latest GDPR thingy, that setting had disappeared now. I can’t see any of the customers from the UK. Do you have any updates on the way i can manage to get the data back on the graph please?

Hey guys - I have this issue now since a theme update - but this option is now gone from setting? Any tips?

Hello @paulbalu

I’m experiencing the same issue and I have trouble to find this setting in the new Shopify menu. Could you help me with this one?

Thanks a lot…!

I’ve been having same issue and I looked in my theme code and found content_for_header had shopifyconsentapi stuff in it and it wAs commented out. So I remove the comment and hopefully it works.

Also my theme had a built in cookie banner that was tied to the logic… I think I got it sorted. Theme was minimog. Anyway I might be able to help people get theirs sorted

Thank you for your response, can you keep me informed of developments on your side?

Yes, i can.

I thought i had it fixed, but apparently not. Sort of back to square one
again even though everything looks right.

I found where the option “Collect data before or after consent” is located in Shopify settings under “Customer Privacy / Cookie Banner / Regions.”

If you deselect countries, you will collect data before consent, maybe that can help.

What? I have been trying to find this setting but it simply does not exist
on my shopify. what the heck. Whats your url read? can you share the link
pls?
