Are There Any Payment Providers That Doesn't Require A Business License In Hong Kong

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner in Hong Kong is seeking payment providers that don’t require a business license for their small operation. They’ve already tried several options with limited success:

Attempted providers:

  • Stripe and Square: Not available in their region
  • 2checkout: Application rejected without explanation
  • PayPal: Currently using, but seeking a backup option
  • OceanPayment and Usee: Both require business licenses

Current status:
The discussion remains unresolved. A community moderator repeatedly suggests consulting Shopify’s official payment gateway directory and filtering by country/region, then contacting providers directly about their business license requirements. Another user shares the same challenge, confirming this is a common issue for small Hong Kong-based sellers.

One participant references a LinkedIn article about using Stripe accounts as a potential workaround, though details aren’t provided in the thread. The core problem—finding compliant payment processors for unlicensed businesses in Hong Kong—has no clear solution presented.

Hi, @Belle9861 .

Welcome to the Shopify Community.

Apart from the payment providers you’ve shared, I recommend checking out our Payment Providers and Online Gateway resource for additional options. You can filter by country/region to see what payment providers are available to you.

While some payment providers may not require a business license, they may have certain limitations or restrictions on the types of transactions for non-business accounts. I recommend reaching out to the payment providers you’re interested in to learn more about their terms and conditions.

Hello Belle,

I am in the same situation and I was wondering if you found a solution ? Many thanks

Hi, @lea9 .

Thanks for joining the thread!

I understand you have a similar inquiry and are trying to find a payment provider that doesn’t require a business license. Could you share where you’re based and what payment providers you’ve explored so far?

Looking forward to your reply!

Thanks for your reply, @lea9 .

I would recommend exploring Shopify’s Online payment gateways and payment provider integrations resource and enter your country to see what payment providers are available to you. We have shared a wide variety to explore, and I would advise contacting the payment providers you’re interested in to see which ones require a business license.
