Are there solutions for losing money on shipping labels due to size issues?

Hi, just wondering if anyone has had similar issues…

I sell stoneware, and many times, what the customer is shown to pay for shipping, and what I end up spending on shipping label is not the same. Here is an example:

Customers buys 4 mugs and 2 plates.

Shipping calculator decides that the default Medium size box is fine, as the weight is under the threshold.

Customer agrees to pay X amount.

I cannot fit everything in a Medium box and must use a Large box.

I don’t want to contact the customer to request more shipping fee.

I eat the cost and use the bigger box.

This has been the case since day one and it hasn’t been that bad initially. But as more customers order more items at once, I am starting to pay substantial amount as a result, especially for international orders.

Is there any way to fix this? Is there a way to calculate shipping by the size (volume) of the items?

Thanks for posting. I hope your day is off to a good start!

Are you using a shipping app for your calculated rates? The reason I ask, is the standard Shopify Shipping does not have the ability to change your default package size when displaying customer rates. It will always display the same default package size. You can change the package you decide to use when purchasing your label, but it will always remain the default size from the customer’s perspective. Unless you use a shipping app.

If you can provide a bit more context regarding your current set up that would be great!
