I have 3 charges from “Shopify ACCTVERIFY ON 04/27” through my checking bank account. I did not authorize or change anything. Has Shopify been breached??
Topic summary
Main issue: Multiple merchants report unexpected bank activity labeled Shopify ACCTVERIFY (e.g., three entries on 04/27) and ask if it indicates a breach.
Shopify update: A staff member states that on or shortly after April 26, 2023, some merchants unintentionally received micro‑deposits due to a Shopify update. Micro‑deposits are two small deposits (under $1) followed by a single withdrawal equal to the total deposits, so the net effect should be neutral or positive if the withdrawal fails.
Scope and cause: Shopify typically does not use micro‑deposits; this was an unintended consequence affecting only external bank accounts that had previously transacted with Shopify Balance accounts. Shopify says the issue has been resolved and should not recur.
Additional reports: Other participants report unwanted debit card charges attributed to Shopify, difficulty contacting support, and frustration with refund steps.
Status/outcomes: Shopify does not indicate a data breach; it frames the event as an unintended verification process. No specific remediation steps were provided beyond confirmation of a fix and an invitation to ask further questions. Some user concerns remain unresolved, including unexplained debit card charges and support access.
It came to our attention that on or shortly after April 26, 2023, some merchants may have unintentionally experienced micro-deposits in their external bank account. Micro-deposits are an industry standard security measure used to verify bank account ownership, in which two small deposits (of less than $1) are made to an account, followed by a single withdrawal in an amount equal to the deposits.
Micro-deposits should always financially resolve in the account holder’s favor, as an equal amount is withdrawn as deposited, or the withdrawal may fail, and the account holder can keep the deposits. The account is not impacted in any other way.
Typically, Shopify does not use micro-deposits as a bank account verification method. These micro-deposits were an unintended consequence related to a Shopify update, and only impacted external bank accounts that had transacted with Shopify Balance accounts. The issue has been resolved, and should not impact your accounts moving forward.

I need help…I have unwanted charges on my debit card and I cannot figure out how they got there, but it came from Shopify. There’s no phone number to call to find out where they come from, no way to figure it out.
This same thing happened to me. It seems Shopify is not a trustworthy company. When trying to get my money back they require many steps that do not work and they just disconnect from the problem. Seems this is a good company to stay from.
