Are you experiencing issues with Avalara AvaTax app not showing Amazon orders?

We recently started selling on Amazon and linked it with Shopify through the Shopify channel. The products’ quantity syncs to Amazon and the orders shows up in Shopify when the order is placed in Amazon. The issue we see is when we check Avalara, the order does not show up in Avalara. We are on a Shopify Plus account. Is anyone using the Avalara AvaTax app made by Shopify to import orders into Avalara? If you are, are you guys seeing this issue or is it something that we are missing? Thanks.

I know this post is 2 years old. Did you ever find a solution to this? I’ve been back and forth with Avalara for 3 weeks. It took them that long to really understand the problem after sending me several solutions that didn’t make sense. I’m a little frustrated by the whole thing. There has to be away to identify marketplace transactions in Avalara to create custom rules to prevent sales tax calculation so the liability reports are accurate.

The solution I came up with is kind of tedious, but it works. It really depends on how many Amazon orders you have a month. The more you have, the more tedious it is.

There are a few options available. For me, I manually updated the location in Avalara to know that it is Amazon, eBay or any other sales channel. There are 2 options that i came up with.

Getting orders

  1. You can filter out all orders where Channel is Amazon and that would give you the Amazon orders to be exported

  2. The other option is create a Shopify Flow to add into a Google Sheet.

Updating orders

1, Manually search transactions that starts with the order number (to take into account refunds) and enter in a LocationCode for that order to something like “Amazon remit taxes”. In my case, I also updated the customer exemption number to the same thing if it is a state that Amazon remit taxes for. If Amazon does not remit taxes, then i don’t enter anything in the customer exemption number, but instead, I enter something like “Amazon does not remit taxes” for LocationCode only.

  1. There was another option I was looking at, but have not fully tested. That is using the Shopify Flow + Google Sheet to create an import file to import into Avalara for the Amazon orders and overwrite/modify the one in Avalara.

I am having this issue with the facebook & instagram channel. Why won’t these sales go to Avalara? Tax is properly calculating, but not showing up in the Avalara transactions.
