If we can have automated marketing email where customers can receive a Welcome email when they sign up, we should be able to do the same with SMS without needing to download a third-party SMS app. Please let me know if this is possible at all.
Shopify does not have a built-in welcome SMS automation the same way it does for email. The native SMS features in Shopify are really only for transactional stuff like order confirmations and shipping updates, not marketing flows.
You can use third party apps Klaviyo,Omnisend etc.

As someone said earlier in the post, at the moment, Shopify does not seem to support a native automated welcome SMS the same way it supports welcome email automations.
I think you can use Shopify Messaging to send SMS marketing campaigns, but I guess SMS marketing campaigns are not compatible with marketing automations.
I agree it would make sense to have this built in, especially since welcome email automations already exist lol.

While Shopify has native support for automated welcome emails, the SMS channel operates under its own set of rules that include specific requirements around carrier compliance and consent. SMS is not fully integrated in the same native automation layer. You can still do it with Shopify Flow, by using the customer created trigger and then pass that info to an SMS provider via integration/webhook. The majority of merchants do so by integrating a marketing platform that supports email as well as SMS so opt in is captured properly and messages remain compliant, albeit automated.
