Why is my automatic captured payment missing some of the payments at checkout? I have never had this happen before since using Shopify for 2.5 years. (For the record, it’s on automatic … not manual.)
Hi @KarenCCC
I’ve thoroughly reviewed your situation, and it seems the central issue is that some payments aren’t being captured automatically at checkout, despite your settings being configured for automatic capture. This is indeed puzzling, especially after 2.5 years of smooth operations.
Potential Causes and Solutions:
1-Payment Gateway Configuration:- Multiple Payment Providers: If you have multiple payment gateways enabled (e.g., Shopify Payments and PayPal), payments processed through gateways other than Shopify Payments might not follow the automatic capture settings. To check this:
- Navigate to your Shopify Admin panel.
- Click on Settings > Payments.
- Review the active payment methods to see if multiple gateways are enabled.- Solution: Ensure that all active payment gateways are configured to capture payments automatically. If a gateway doesn’t support automatic capture, you might need to manage those payments manually or consider consolidating to a single gateway that aligns with your preferred settings.
2-Authorization Periods:- Expired Authorizations: Each payment gateway has a specific authorization period during which you must capture the payment. If this period lapses, the payment can’t be captured automatically. For instance, Shopify Payments has a 7-day authorization window.
- Solution: Regularly monitor orders to ensure payments are captured within the authorization period. Setting up notifications can help alert you before an authorization expires.
3-Order Fulfillment Timing:- Capture on Fulfillment: If your settings are configured to capture payments upon order fulfillment, delays in fulfilling orders can lead to missed captures, especially if the authorization period expires.
- Solution: Review your payment capture settings:
- Go to Settings > Payments in your Shopify Admin.
- Under Payment capture method, ensure it’s set to Automatically at checkout.
- If it’s set to Automatically at fulfillment, consider switching to Automatically at checkout to capture payments immediately when orders are placed.
4-Technical Glitches or Updates:- System Updates: Occasionally, system updates or technical issues can alter settings or disrupt normal operations.
- Solution: Double-check your payment settings to confirm they remain as intended:
- Navigate to Settings > Payments.
- Click on Manage under your payment provider.
- Verify that Payment capture is set to Automatic.
- If everything appears correct, but issues persist, consider reaching out to Shopify Support for further assistance.
By systematically reviewing these areas, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with missing automatic payment captures. If you need any other assistance, feel free to reply, and I will try my best to help.
Best regards,
Daisy
