I want to create an automatic ‘we bought too much’ section where a discount is automatically added/removed on overstocked products.
I was thinking the best solution would be:
- Add a tag to a product based on an inventory parameter (would need to be able to never include certain products)
- Add a discount to the product
- Put that product into a collection which is featured on the specific ‘We bought too much’ website page
- Remove tag/discount/collection when the stock goes back to a healthy inventory level
I’m guessing Shopify Flow could help with this in some way, but I have no idea where to start! Has anyone created a similar flow or have any better suggestions?

Have you considered using a Smart Collection in Shopify? This could be a simple solution to your problem.
Here’s a screenshot of how you could potentially set this up. You’ll need to combine an “Inventory stock greater than” condition with a variable number of “Variant’s title does not equal” conditions (to exclude items).

EDIT: Once you have this collection created, you could just add a “Featured collection” block to whichever page you want in your theme, and give it the “We Bought Too Much” title.

You can easily manage this using the Inventory status feature within the Product Labels & Badges app. Allow me to walk you through the steps to display discounts for overstocked items specifically.
Step 1: Install and activate the app.
Step 2: Create a label or badge containing the discount details, like “Save $X with code XXX”
Step 3: Select the collection you’ve set up for overstocked products in the Product settings tab to showcase the badge. Besides, utilize the Inventory status feature, choose “Custom” option, and set it to “Equal or greater = 50” (for example) to display the badge only for products with 50 items or more in stock.
Step 4: Configure the pages in the General settings tab.
Additional Suggestions:
- Consider creating product bundles to boost sales and clear inventory faster.
- Instead of using “We bought too much”, opt for more enticing names. Customers are often drawn to limited-time offers, so consider creating a sense of urgency in your content.
