Automatically use original file name as product name

Hi guys, hoping someone can help as Shopify support have stopped replying to me!

My client is selling digital prints, downloadable or as a hard copy via an old e-commerce website that my agency developed. We are trying to convert her to Shopify.

At present, when she uploads new products to her exisiting site, whatever the original file name is for the image, that becomes the product name.

The naming of her images is important for people searching for them, and she uploads sometimes 100s of images to her site at a time to sell (event photography). Meaning she doesn’t want the tedious task of renaming every single image as a individual product on Shopify.

Is there a way with Shopify, or a Plugin I can get, where when she uploads her images, the file name either becomes searchable on the site, or automatically becomes the product name?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Emma

Hi Emma,

It won’t be possible to create new products with the image name as product title by just uploading the images using the shopify admin.

A closer approach that can get the job done would be to use the csv product import feature. She would have to upload images to a publicly accessible storage such as shopify files, google drive, dropbox etc and add the image links to the csv file. In the csv file she can use spreadsheet formulas to get the product title from the image link. Finally, import the csv file.

As you might have noticed the above approach becomes a bit tedious and inconvenient on daily basis. To make the merchants work easier, it is certainly possible to have an app that can get the job done exactly as you want.

In fact, I am currently working on an app that would allow users to upload images to existing products and I haven’t considered creating new products from uploaded images. I am interested to know more about your requirements, maybe I can include this feature in the first app release. In case you would like to discuss, please feel free to dm.

Alternatively, it is also possible to hire an app developer to create a custom app which would be very specific to your requirements and likings.
