Automating Returns - App or Out The Box (ShopifyPlus)

Topic summary

Small Shopify Plus retailer seeks to automate returns across the UK, Channel Islands, USA, and potentially the Middle East; current manual workflow is slow and error‑prone.

Key needs/questions:

  • Understand limitations of Shopify’s native returns (initiation, tracking, refunds, reporting) and any gaps for cross‑border use.
  • Fit for a small business with seasonal peaks (~20 returns/day during sales, quarterly) and low volumes otherwise.

Suggestion raised:

  • Happy Returns: in the US, allows in‑person Return Bar or mail; outside the US, mail only.

Latest update/outcome:

  • The suggested app was deemed too expensive for the company’s limited/seasonal return volume; reviews appeared mixed. No adoption decision made.

Open items:

  • Clear documentation on Shopify’s built‑in returns limitations is still needed.
  • Alternatives that balance cost with automation, multi‑region support, and robust refund/reporting workflows remain to be identified.

Status: Unresolved and ongoing; the requester is still evaluating whether Shopify’s out‑of‑the‑box returns suffice or if a more cost‑effective app is better for their scale and regions.

Hi,

I am working with a small business that uses shopifyplus. They have one shop (retail) and sell online to UK, Channel Islands, USA and hopefully in the future the Middle East. They want to install Automated Returns as current process time consuming and open to error. I can see Shopify has this capability. Just trying to find out what the limitations are if any. Thinking along initiating, tracking, refunding and reporting but could be other areas. Is there a better solution for a company of this size. During sale period c 20 returns a day and then tails of.

Any help greatly welcome. I have read the Shopify docs but they don’t talk about limitations.

For US customer there are options to return to bar or by mail, customers outside the US can return by mail.

Hi,

Thank you for the suggestion. I have taken a look and the monthly subscription seems steep for the number of returns that they get. The numbers quoted are during the sale period, which happens quarterly. The reviews were mixed. Thank you for the suggestion anyway.
