Best B2B sales channels inside Shopify for wholesale and distributor growth?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to pressure-test Shopify’s B2B sales channel options from real operators who’ve actually used them beyond theory.

We’re a CPG food brand with both DTC and wholesale demand, and I’m currently evaluating which Shopify-native (or Shopify-integrated) B2B paths actually perform in the real world, such as:

  • Shopify B2B (company profiles, price lists, net terms)

  • Shopify Wholesale channel (legacy vs current)

  • Shopify Collective

  • External B2B integrations tied into Shopify (e.g. order portals, reps, or distributor workflows)

What I’m trying to understand from experience, not marketing pages is:

  • What actually converts for wholesale buyers?

  • Where did friction show up (onboarding, pricing logic, MOQ enforcement, reps vs self-serve)?

  • What scaled cleanly vs became a maintenance headache?

If you’ve had positive (or painful) experiences, I’d really appreciate hearing:

  • Your business type (CPG, apparel, manufacturing, etc.)

  • Which setup you used

  • What you’d do differently if you were starting again

Thanks in advance and looking to learn from people who’ve already paid the tuition on this.

Mahalos,
Derek

Hi @hawaiischoice

As a Shopify Partner, we found that CPG brands convert the best on Shopify B2B when they have company profiles and price lists. Friction manifests in onboarding and MOQs. It scales cleanly compared to legacy wholesale. Pair it with a rep order portal app for hybrid sales and simpler distributor workflows that deliver real, scalable solutions.

Hey Derek — we’re an app/consulting agency that helps B2B wholesalers automate their order intake, so I’ve seen this play out across a lot of Shopify setups.

What actually converts for wholesale buyers? Ease of use and automation. Buyers don’t want to learn a new system — they want to order how they already order, with as few clicks as possible. Self-serve portals work for some, but the less friction you add to their existing workflow, the better your conversion.

Where did friction show up? Large orders. Buyers with 20-50+ line items don’t want to manually enter everything into a portal. They already have the order in a spreadsheet or PDF — re-keying it feels like busywork. That’s when they just email it to you instead.

What scaled cleanly vs. became a maintenance headache?

  • Scaled well: Custom automated pricing logic — once it’s set up, it just runs.

  • Became a headache: Manual entry of emailed/PDF orders. It works at low volume, but as you grow, someone’s spending hours on data entry and fixing errors.

On Shopify B2B — depends on your plan:

  • Plus: Native B2B handles custom pricing, portal, payment terms well.

  • Non-Plus: You’ll need third-party wholesale apps for portal/pricing.

Either way, plan for the hybrid reality — portal orders + emailed POs. That’s what led us to build LevelOps PDF to Order to automate the email/PDF side.

Happy to chat more if helpful — always good to compare notes with other food brands.
