Hi guys, I’m wondering about the best baseline theme right now. I used to go with Dawn, but lately I see a lot of discussion around Horizon, and Pitch (anyway, reviews aren’t great)
Some questions I have:
Do people think Horizon is now the best “foundation” theme?
What are the advantages of Horizon/Pitch vs Dawn from a developer and maintenance perspective?
Is migrating from Dawn to Horizon worth it?
Do you see Shopify continuing to support Dawn, or is the focus shifting to Horizon?
Horizon’s now Shopify’s official block-first flagship theme, offering cleaner nested blocks and faster dev iteration. Dawn is still maintained (latest update Jul 24, 2025), so only switch if you’re doing a major redesign.

In my opinion,
Yes - Horizon is currently the strongest “foundation” theme if you’re building a new store. It’s built with Shopify’s latest technologies and reflects where Shopify is heading. Just like Dawn replaced Debut, it looks like Horizon is the next evolution of Shopify’s free theme stack.
Dawn introduced Sections Everywhere and the big shift to Online Store 2.0.
Horizon goes further with newer techniques, improved modularity, more flexible blocks, and updated design patterns, all aligned with Shopify’s long-term roadmap.
That said, “best” is always relative. Dawn is still extremely stable and suitable for many stores today
2. What are the advantages of Horizon (and Pitch) vs Dawn from a developer and maintenance perspective?
From a developer standpoint, Horizon offers a few advantages:
More flexible blocks and layouts (nested blocks, global blocks, more modular architecture)
More built-in features that previously required custom code in Dawn
Better alignment with Shopify’s future updates
Cleaner structure for long-term maintainability
3. Is migrating from Dawn to Horizon worth it?
If your store is working well, looks good, and has no bugs → migration is not necessary.
Dawn is still fully supported and stable.
However, you should consider migrating if:
You’re rebranding or planning a major redesign
You want access to Horizon’s new layout flexibility
You want to build on Shopify’s future-focused theme architecture
Migrating just for the sake of switching usually doesn’t justify the effort.
Migrating during a redesign makes the most sense
4. Do you see Shopify continuing to support Dawn, or is the focus shifting to Horizon?
Based on update patterns:
Dawn: last update - July 24, 2025
Horizon: last update - October 28, 2025
This clearly shows Shopify is now investing more in Horizon.
Dawn will still be supported, but most new features and future improvements are likely going into Horizon.
