Our store sells very high-end audio equipment. The products range in size from small items like cables and turntable cartridges to extremely heavy loudspeakers. We’ve been leaving the shipping off thus far, but with some of our larger items it’s getting too expensive to eat the cost, so we want to start charging for shipping on the site.
For most items we’d likely use UPS calculated shipping rates, as we already have a UPS account and can get dimensions and weights for most of the items we sell from the manufacturer. However, there are some items which are so large / heavy that we have to get them loaded onto a pallet and sent via special truck courier.
Is there a way in Shopify to set up shipping such that most items’ shipping costs are calculated and billed at purchase based on stored dimensions/weight and destination, but to keep specific oversized items tagged as “shipping to be calculated later”?
Obviously it’s a hassle to have to bill the customer separately for the shipping after they’ve already paid for the item, but the actual shipping costs simply can’t be determined known until we get a quote from the trucking service for getting that particular item to that particular person.
