So this week, I’ve been hit with fraud orders - luckily only 2 and very low orders at £2.42. Still cost me in payment fees though, as I didn’t think to raise this with Shopify until after I cancelled and refunded the orders. But I’m thankful they were big orders because I’m a small business and can’t take the hit.
I also checked out my abandoned carts and saw that these fraudsters have been creating DOZENS of orders, most likely to try out multiple stolen cards to see which goes through.
I don’t want to change my Shopify payments to manual - and why should I add more emails/extra steps to the order process for me and my customers just because of scammers and lack of Shopify’s care to tackle this issue - so I thought hey lets use the locations I know that I’m being targeted from to stop them from getting on to my website.
There is a FREE plan available on the Blockify Fraud Filter - Blocker that allows up to 4 rules. I have used the ‘Blocker and Re-Director’ within the app, to block anyone in locations to my website. As the current problematic countries (India, Singapore and Lithuania) take up 3/4 rules, it means I can stay on the free plan and block the problematic countries. Deterring them from using my site as part of their scam.
My plan is to keep an eye on abandoned carts, to see if any other countries become an issue of creating suspicious baskets and block them before they even get to place an order. If there have to try multiple orders/cards before getting one that works, I hope to catch them beforehand.
Fingers crossed this app does a good job and this is the last time I get a fraud order. There are paid plans for the app too, which gives more access to more rules/tightens it all up further and if I get hit with higher orders/more frequently, I would even consider paying it as it seems less of a cost than the money I’d loose to scammers.
Thought I’d just pop this here, to help anyone who is also trying to navigate this issue. It seems the easiest/cheapest way around the bell ends for now.
