We’ve discovered an issue with tax overrides in (Draft) Orders and wanted to check if anyone else has experienced the same.
setup:
- Shopify Tax (EU)
- Multiple tax collections with country-specific overrides
- “Lobster Taxes” collection → Lobster with 10% VAT for Austria
- “Red Taxes” collection → Seafood, should also receive 10% VAT in Austria
The problem: As soon as we add a lobster (with an Austria override of 10%) to an Order with an Austrian shipping address, all other products in the order are suddenly taxed at 20% (Austria’s standard rate) — even though they should be taxed at 10%.
Without lobster in the cart: seafood correctly taxed at 10% AT
With lobster in the cart: seafood incorrectly taxed at 20% AT
In Germany: everything correct (lobster 19%, caviar 7%, no override) ![]()
How to reproduce:
- Create a collection, place a product inside
- Add an explicit Austria override (10%) for one collection.
- Create a draft order with an Austrian address
- First, place an normal, reduced taxes product (e.g. Seafood) → Estimated Taxes show 10% VAT
- Second, place the override product → first product will be 20%, second product will be 10% → this is wrong!
Has anyone else experienced this, or is this a known bug? And where we can report this to Shopify?
Wrong: Coho taxed 20% → wrong, 100% Shipping taxed 20% → wrong
Correct: Product and shipping taxed 10%
