[Bug?] Unable to edit Subscription Items in orders

I’m seeing a new issue in Order Management where I’m unable to edit line items connected to a subscription contract. When you click “Edit” on an order with line items that have are part of a subscription contract, those lines just don’t appear in the Edit UI. So if an order only has one line and its from a subscription, after you click Edit there are no lines to edit. Here’s an example screengrab from one of our dev shops but I’ve seen it in a live shop too:

Example Order Id with this issue: gid://shopify/Order/5119244763387

This seems to have just popped up recently.

Any ideas? I don’t see anything new in Shopify Docs around order line items not being editable if their from a subscription. Merchants might want to remove or change item quantity, etc.

Thanks!

Hello @Brian_S_1 ,

Apologies for the confusion and lack of options. We are actively investigating this issue. I don’t have a timeline for you yet, but as soon as I do I will add a comment here.

Your patience and your detailed posts are much appreciate by us!

Thank you

Hello again,

The ability to edit subscription line items has actually not been implemented yet. Here is a link to the documentation. There you will see an explanation for when you can and cannot edit products with selling plans. I hope this answers your question.

Thank you

Hey Chase,

That text you’ve highlighted in the docs is referring to editing of prepaid subscriptions, not pay-per-delivery subscriptions.

Closer to the top of that article you’ll see the docs say:

“Pay-per-delivery orders are managed and fulfilled the same as non-subscription orders.”

Additionally, editing Pay-per-Delivery Subscription items from a Shopify order worked without issue up until the issue we are reporting here from a few days ago. Can you assist?

@ChaseKaneki i think there might be confusion because I’m my example it’s a normal pay-per-delivery order and the docs you link to specify that they’re managed like normal orders:

Pay-per-delivery orders are managed and fulfilledthe same as non-subscription orders.

Plus, for the last two years (since Shopify opened these APIs) merchants have been able to manage these orders

Hello @Senam_1 and @Brian_S_1 ,

Terribly sorry for all the confusion. I know it must feel frustrating to remember having the capability to edit line items for subscriptions and then have it not available.

To clarify the documentation, “Pay-per-delivery orders are managed and fulfilled the same as non-subscription orders.” is true. However, there are limitation for what you can do on editing subscription line items. They are managed the same, because you go to the same location to change them, sort through them on your orders page, etc. However, they have different limitations.

You’ll notice on the page that we only have a section for managing prepaid subscription orders, even though this entire page is for Managing subscription orders. We don’t have a section for managing pay-per-delivery orders. That because inside managing prepaid subscription orders we state the caveat that "you can’t the subscription product".

The historical documentation I was reading stated that by design we haven’t allowed editing the line items for pay for pay-per-delivery. To ensure and build trust, I will try to locally revert the code back 4 or 5 days to confirm the information previously stated. If I find that it was available, I will follow up with leadership and figure out the next steps. Regardless, I will return here and give another update.

Thank you so much for your patience @Brian_S_1 @Senam_1 . The Shopify community sincerely appreciates the work you do and we apologize for any frustration this has caused.

@Brian_S_1 @Senam_1

I did revert our code back to April 11th and I was still unable to edit the line item for the subscription.

What I am going to do next is bring in another Shopifolk to double check my findings. I want to ensure you are receiving excellent care because we really do appreciate your posts and contributions.

I appreciate the extra effort @ChaseKaneki ! I’m very confident that you were able to edit subscription items previously. I know this because you used to get this banner that let you know you edited a subscription item and that you might want to also update the subscriptions. Those banners are still visible on orders that were edited in the past. They look like this:

Here’s the order that this is from: gid://shopify/Order/5295099281687

Thanks again!

Hi @Brian_S_1 !

@ChaseKaneki and I dove into this more and were able to see the same message you said on a refunded order.

The order section has always allowed you to REFUND some subscription items from an order, or REMOVE them by refunding the complete quantity, which would explain the message you’re talking about.

That is available through the refund page though, not the edit page.

If you can provide an example of an order where you adjusted the quantity up, we’d be happy to take a closer look at that one.
